IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team kept rolling with a 196.800-195.975 victory over Iowa on Friday (Feb. 14) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With the win, the Wolverines remain undefeated at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines swept the event titles and received contributions from up and down the lineup.
On its first event, Michigan posted a 49.250 on uneven bars to get off to a strong start. Freshman Sierra Brooks showed off her high-level routine for a 9.900, winning the event for the second straight meet.
Brooks made it two-for-two when she captured the vault title with a 9.875. She was not the only one, as a trio of Wolverines tied for the lead. Sophomore Abby Heiskell competed on vault for the first time since the season opener in the leadoff spot and earned her first career vault title. Sophomore Abby Brenner continued her hot streak on the event with her third straight big vault and second win in as many meets.
Michigan broke out the sunglasses on floor exercise. The team always thinks of the event as a party and with Iowa's 80's theme volunteer assistant coach Quest Hayden started a trend of passing a pair of sunglasses on to the next competitor after a hit routine. The Wolverines partied to a 49.300 on the event to extend their lead.
Freshman Gabby Wilson put the finishing touches on the party with a 9.900 for her second straight floor victory.
U-M kept the sunglasses trend going through beam, and sophomore Maddie Mariani enjoyed her turn with a career-best 9.900 for her first career event title as Michigan wrapped up the win.
Brooks secured her third career all-around victory with a 39.475, giving her three wins on the day. It is the third meet this season she has won at least three events/all-around titles.Â
Michigan will conclude the conference portion of its season on Saturday (Feb. 22) as it battles for the Big Ten regular-season title at the Elevate the Stage meet in Toledo, Ohio. The Wolverines will be matched up against Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota and Penn State in the 7 p.m. session.
The next home meet for the Wolverines will be Feb. 28 against New Hampshire at 6:30 p.m. It will be the team's Spring Break meet with Block M sunglasses for the first 1,000 fans and Maddy Osman senior recognition night. [ Tickets ]
