AMES, Iowa -- True freshman distance runner Ericka VanderLende made some history at the Iowa State Classic on Friday (Feb. 14) in her collegiate debut over the 5,000-meter distance.
With a strong 16:16.46 effort in her first-ever 5K race on a track, VanderLende finished fifth in the invitational section of the event and moved up to No. 10 in school history on the indoor list.
She held onto the lead group for the better part of half of the race, but eventually dropped back to the chase pack. She remained at the front of that group once they made contact with her, powered by a final kilometer that was five seconds faster than her penultimate 1,000 meters.
VanderLende was the only Michigan women entered to compete at Iowa State.
