ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Shooting 57.4 percent from the floor with five players reaching double-digit scoring, including 16 points from freshman Franz Wagner, the University of Michigan men's basketball team cruised past Indiana, 89-65, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 16) at Crisler Center.
The win was Michigan's eighth straight against the Hoosiers and seventh in a row by double figures. With the win, seniors Zavier Simpson and Jon Teske became the winnigest players in Michigan basketball history, capturing their 105th career win as Wolverines.
Michigan shot 31-for-54 from the field, which included a season-best 52.9 percent (9-for-17) shooting from long range.
Wagner led the scoring effort for the Wolverines, while four other players scored in double figures: Brandon Johns Jr. (14 points), Eli Brooks (13 points), Isaiah Livers (12 points) and Simpson (12 points).
Simpson also tallied a game-high 11 assists, making Sunday's contest his 15th career game with 10+ assists, giving him the U-M all-time record, formerly held by Gary Grant (14). With his 12 points and 11 assists, Simpson recorded his ninth career double-double.
Wagner's eight rebounds also paced all Michigan players, while Teske added seven boards and Livers, Johns and Austin Davis each brought down five apiece.
The teams traded baskets before the first media timeout with Indiana leading 12-11 at the 15:12 mark. The Wolverines recaptured the lead -- one they would hold for the rest of the contest -- on a three-pointer by Brooks before taking their first timeout with 12:38 remaining in the first half.
Baskets from Livers, Wagner and Davis gave U-M a five-point lead, 21-16, at the midpoint of the first half. The Maize and Blue extended that five-point lead to double digits with a 10-5 run capped off by two Livers free throws to make the score 31-21.
Indiana closed the gap slightly in the final minutes of the first half, cutting the 10-point lead down to seven, 41-34, heading into the break.
Livers led the scoring charge for the Wolverines in the first half with nine points, a total that was followed closely by seven each from Wagner, Davis and Brooks. Simpson had a game-high six assists in the first half and Davis tied for a game-high four rebounds in just seven minutes. Wagner and Teske also chipped in four boards each.
U-M came out firing in the second half, beginning with a 10-4 scoring run that gave it a 51-38 lead, its largest of the day. Livers and Wagner both drained threes in the first four minutes of the half and Teske and Simpson both added jumpers to give Michigan a 53-42 advantage at the first media timeout of the second half.
The Wolverines kept the pedal to the metal, pushing the lead to 20 points on a Wagner layup with 12:43 remaining in the contest.
Michigan and Indiana went back-and-forth in the last 10 minutes of the game with U-M pushing the lead to as much as 23 and Indiana cutting it down to 17, but U-M comfortably cruised to the finish.
The Wolverines will return to action Wednesday (Feb. 19) in a road tilt against Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
