PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team led in the early stages of the game, but an 11-2 run by Rutgers to end the first quarter proved to be the difference in a 62-41 Scarlet Knights win Sunday afternoon (Feb. 16) at the RAC.
Sophomore Amy Dilk led the way for Michigan with 12 points, four boards and two assists. Michigan had five players score five points in sophomore Naz Hillmon, senior Akienreh Johnson, junior Hailey Brown and freshman Michelle Sidor. Rutgers shot 41.8 percent (23-for-55) from the floor in the game while holding Michigan to 30.0 percent (15-for-50) shooting. RU held a 38-32 advantage on the glass.
Michigan grabbed an 8-5 lead in the early going on a triple from Johnson with 3:16 left in the quarter before RU responded with an 11-2 spurt to end the period to give the Scarlet Knights a 16-10 lead after 10 minutes.
After Rutgers scored to start the second quarter, Sidor canned a triple at the top of the key to bring Michigan back within five, 18-13, with 8:41 left before the half.
The Scarlet Knights led by 12 points with 2:58 left before the break, but Michigan got a putback from freshman Maddie Nolan and a layup from Dilk to close within six points, 27-21, with 49 seconds left before the half. Rutgers scored the final three points of the quarter, hitting the break with a 30-21 lead.
With Rutgers up by 13, 36-23, with 5:48 to go, Dilk found Brown for a triple to bring Michigan within 10 points. Dilk answered a Rutgers bucket the next trip down with a righty layup to keep the lead at 10, but RU ran off six straight points to regain a 16-point lead with 3:13 to go in the period.
Rutgers hit back-to-back triples, taking a 19-point lead (52-33) and forcing a Michigan timeout with 8:01 left in the contest.
Michigan got four fourth-quarter points from sophomore Emily Kiser but could not close the gap as the Scarlet Knights grabbed the win.
Michigan will close out a stretch of four games in 10 days Wednesday (Feb. 19), hosting Illinois at 7 p.m.
