IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Sophomore Maggie MacNeil (100-yard butterfly) and senior Miranda Tucker (100-yard breaststroke) each won Big Ten titles to pace the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team on Friday (Feb. 21) at the Big Ten Championships at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. After three days, Michigan remains in second place (855 points). Ohio State is in first place (1,016 points).
MacNeil kept up her winning ways, claiming her second consecutive Big Ten title in the 100-yard butterfly (49.42) and coming within two tenths of her co-shared NCAA record. Tucker, meanwhile, became the program's first Big Ten champion in the 100-yard breaststroke since Rachel Gustin in 1996.
Michigan cleaned up in the 100-yard butterfly, as six Wolverines in the top 16 combined to score 130 points. MacNeil led the way, setting Big Ten Championships and pool records, followed by sophomore Olivia Carter, who won the silver medal with the second-best time in school history (51.67). Senior Vanessa Krause rounded out the championship finalists, finishing fourth (52.27). Three others scored points in the consolation final, including junior Alexis Margett in 10th (53.76), freshman Megan Glass in 12th (53.84) and junior Emma Cleason in 15th (54.12).
For Tucker, the 100-yard breaststroke was a monumental and memorable swim, as she raced past Ohio State's Hannah Bach off the wall at the halfway point to secure the win (58.15). In her three previous swims of the 100-yard breaststroke at the Big Ten Championships, Tucker has two silver medals and one bronze medal, making the win on Friday extra sweet.

Junior Nikki Canale capped a couple of fantastic days on the springboard events, finishing fourth on three-meter on Friday (327.35) after taking sixth on one-meter yesterday. She became the first U-M diver to make the final on both one- and three-meter at the Big Ten Championships since Sarah Kamstra in 2016. Junior Camryn McPherson snuck into the consolation final and improved both her seed and her score, taking 13th (273.85). Freshman Lauren Cheetham (20th, 257.50) and junior Christy Cutshaw (24th, 251.40) added points in the bonus final. Through two days, U-M divers have accumulated 125 points.
Sophomore Victoria Kwan blasted a new personal record to make the final of the 400-yard IM, finishing fifth (4:09.92). Notably, her time in preliminaries of 4:09.58 was fifth-best in school history and also was under last year's invited times for the NCAA Championships, improving her odds of making the meet this year. Junior Kate Krolikowski dug deep and used a big freestyle kick to earn her spot in the consolation final, finishing 14th (4:16.80)
Senior Chloe Hicks shaved a few tenths off her previous PR to qualify for the final of the 200-yard freestyle, finishing sixth (1:46.13). Her time of 1:45.66 in preliminaries was ninth-best in school history. Three freshmen occupied spots in the bonus final: Kaitlynn Sims was 17th (1:47.22), Sophia Kudryashova was 18th (1:47.56) and Glass, who was coming off the 100-yard butterfly earlier in the session, was 24th (1:49.04).
Three Wolverines got second swims in the 100-yard backstroke, two of which came in the consolation final. Sophomore Katie Minnich climbed up to 12th from an outside lane, shaving a half-second off preliminaries in clocking the 10th-best time in school history (53.46). Senior Jacqui Schafer joined her in the consolation final, finishing 16th (54.16). Freshman Mariella Venter had to swim the event three times on Friday -- the result of a timing malfunction in her heat during preliminaries -- but still set a PR, finishing in a tie for 17th (53.92).
The foursome of MacNeil, junior Daria Pyshnenko, Tucker and Krause closed out the night with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.57).
The Big Ten Championships will conclude Saturday (Feb. 22) at the CRWC in Iowa City, Iowa. Preliminaries will begin at 11 a.m. CST and finals begin at 6:30 p.m. Diving preliminaries are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
