SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 2020 indoor regular season has come to a close for the University of Michigan women's track and field team as a select few distance runners competed Saturday (Feb. 22) at the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational.
The All-American distance medley relay team put themselves just inside the tentative bubble for making it to March's NCAA Indoor Championships with just one weekend left in the qualifying window, while several individuals turned in strong tune-up performances ahead of next weekend's Big Ten Indoor Championships.
The quartet of Alice Hill, Chloe Foster, Aurora Rynda and Meg Darmofal finished a narrow runner-up to Big Ten foe Wisconsin in 11:05.89. The Wolverines led throughout much of the race, though Darmofal was unable to hold off NCAA champion Alicia Monson of Wisconsin on the final 1,600-meter leg.
The relay is composed of four relay legs of varying distances: 1,200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,600 meters.
Michigan tentatively sits in 11th nationally as of publication, just inside the 12-team cutoff that will qualify for nationals. The Wolverines could have one more shot at bolstering their chances to qualify with the Big Ten Indoor Championships coming up in Geneva, Ohio, this coming Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-29).
Several Wolverines also competed individually in the afternoon, all exceeding or approaching career-best performances as they tuned up for the conference meet.
Annie Taylor ran a new personal-record 2:08.06 to finish seventh at 800 meters, with Amber Gall just behind at 2:09.94 for 10th.
Jena Metwalli came within a quarter-second of her mile personal record as she clocked 4:48.64 to finish runner-up.
