PRINCETON, N.J. -- University of Michigan rowing assistant Liz Tuppen will be a member of the coaching staff for the U.S. Women's Team as part of the 2020 World Rowing Under-23 Championships this summer (Aug. 16-23) in Bled, Slovenia, USRowing announced.
"I am honored to join this staff to assist USRowing at the World Rowing Championships," said Tuppen. "It is a privilege to help coach this team of talented athletes, and I look forward to helping represent USRowing on the international stage."
Tuppen is in her eighth season at Michigan. She has worked closely with the second varsity eight boat for the last five seasons, helping the boat capture three Big Ten titles (2015, '17, '19) in that time frame. The U-M 2V8 has qualified for three straight NCAA grand finals (2017-19) and has two bronze medals at the NCAA Championships (2017, '19) in addition to finishing fourth in 2018. Those finishes have led U-M to two third-place team finishes as well (2017, '19).
After being named part of the 2019 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Region 4 Staff of the Year with her fellow U-M coaches, Tuppen coached South Africans Tayla-May Bentley and Jessica Schoonbee to a women's pair silver medal at the 2019 World U23 Rowing Championships.
"Liz has been an outstanding coach and her contributions are so important to the success of our program here at Michigan," said head coach Mark Rothstein.
"We know that she will play a big role in the success that USRowing has this summer as well. We are thrilled that she has earned this opportunity with USRowing, and we are excited to support her and Team USA from here in Michigan."
A native of Buffalo, New York, Tuppen will work along with head coach Andrew Carter, who holds the same position at the University of Iowa, and Michigan alumna and USRowing Director of Athlete Identification and Development Brett Sickler Gorman (2002-05). This will mark Tuppen's first appointment with USRowing.
"I've known Liz for years and have admired the work she's done at Michigan from afar," said Gorman. "She is clearly a key member of the Michigan rowing staff and has made numerous contributions to their success over her eight-year tenure.
"Each year I'm tasked with assembling the best U23 coaching staff possible to propel Team USA to international success, and Liz is the perfect fit to work with Andrew and me in Iowa this summer. Her work at Michigan coupled with her success with the women's pair at the 2019 U23 World Championships makes her more than qualified to train the next generation of USA Olympians."
The Women's U23 Selection Camp is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, and boats will be named on Sunday, July 21. The camp will include selection for the fours boats (4-, 4+, 4x), the 8+ boat and potentially two pairs (2-, 2x).
