Third-Quarter Surge Sends Michigan Past Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 24-4 run in the middle of the third quarter to take control of the contest, winning its third straight game, 80-66, win over Penn State on Thursday evening (Feb. 27) at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Sophomore Naz Hillmon once again led the way, scoring 26 points on 12-for-15 shooting to go with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Classmate Amy Dilk turned in 15 points, nine boards and seven assists, with junior Hailey Brown going for 12 points and six boards. Freshman Maddie Nolan turned in a career-high 10 points along with five rebounds and six assists. Michigan tallied 24 assists in the contest and held a 44-31 advantage on the glass.
PSU scored five straight points to open the third quarter, regaining a 35-33 lead at the 9:08 mark. The teams went back and forth, with Penn State grabbing a 37-35 lead.
It was all Michigan from there as the Wolverines uncorked a 24-4 run to put the game out of reach. U-M scored six straight on a layups from Brown, Dilk and Nolan to regain a 41-37 lead and force a PSU timeout at the 6:20 mark of the third.
The run continued behind six straight points from Hillmon, with freshman Izabel Varejão scoring down low after a PSU basket for a 49-39 advantage with an even 4:00 on the clock.
Back-to-back triples from Nolan pushed Michigan's lead to 55-41 with 2:20 left in the third. Dilk and Hillmon converted layups on Michigan's next two trips down the floor to complete the 24-4 run, staking Michigan a 59-41 lead with 40 ticks left in the third. Penn State scored a triple on its final possession as Michigan headed to the fourth with a 59-44 lead.
Brown scored the first seven points of the fourth period on a pair of free throws, a triple and a layup, followed by a Dilk layup for a 68-44 lead three minutes into the final quarter.
Michigan's lead never dipped below 12 the rest of the way in the 14-point victory.
Penn State scored the first bucket of the game, but Michigan countered with a 7-0 run on free throws from Hillmon, a triple from Brown and a layup from Hillmon for a 7-2 lead just two minutes into the contest. U-M got five straight points from senior Akienreh Johnson, doubling up the Lady Lions, 14-7, at the 5:12 mark of the period.
Michigan's lead hit double figures for the first time, 21-11, on a Dilk triple from the left corner with 2:25 remaining. U-M led, 23-13, after 10 minutes as Penn State got one more bucket and Dilk made good on a pair at the line to give Michigan a 23-13 lead after 10 minutes.
Penn State held a 17-10 advantage in the second quarter, sending Michigan to the break with a 33-30 lead. PSU turned Michigan over 15 times in the first 20 minutes, resulting in 11 points for the home team.
U-M will close out the regular season Sunday (March 1), hosting Indiana at noon. The senior class of Johnson and Kayla Robbins will be honored prior to the game as part of Senior Day.
