ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team raced out to an early lead, but an 11-0 Indiana run in the late stages of the first quarter changed the momentum as Michigan never led again, falling, 78-60, to No. 22-ranked Indiana on Sunday (March 1) at Crisler Center.
Senior Akienreh Johnson tallied her second double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Sophomore Naz Hillmon went for 13 points and seven boards, with freshman Maddie Nolan scoring a career-best 13. Sophomore Amy Dilk rounded out Michigan's double-figure scorers with 12 points. Michigan held a 38-30 advantage on the glass, but Indiana shot 53.7 percent (29-for-54) from the floor compared to a 33.9 percent (20-for-59) showing from Michigan.
Michigan raced out to a 10-4 lead behind a pair of triples from Nolan in the early going before Indiana used an 11-0 run over the next several minutes for a 19-14 lead at the 1:25 mark of the first.
Dilk made good on a pair of free throws with 9:42 on the second-quarter clock to pull Michigan back within one, 19-18, to start the period.
Michigan climbed back within three points, 30-27, on a Nolan free throw, but Indiana answered with four straight points for a 34-27 lead with 2:41 left before the half. Michigan held the Hoosiers off the board the rest of the quarter to hit the break facing a three-point deficit, 34-31.
IU used a 6-0 run to start the third quarter for a 40-31 lead just two minutes into the period. Hillmon made good on an offensive rebound to give Michigan its first points of the half, trimming IU's lead to seven (40-33) at the 6:42 mark.
U-M continued to chip away at the Indiana lead, getting within five, 46-41, on a pair from Hillmon at the line with 4:47 to go, but Indiana countered with five straight to regain a 10-point lead.
Indiana hit the fourth quarter with a 56-43 lead and scored the first eight points of the frame, extending the advantage to 64-43.
The Wolverines got within 15 points, 73-58, on a three-point play from Dilk with 1:49 remaining before Indiana held on for the 18-point win.
Michigan finished the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and 10-8 mark in Big Ten action to finish seventh. U-M will be the No. 7 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and will play Thursday (March 5) at 6:30 p.m.
