ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and junior Bella Lorenzini pulled out a straight-set win at No. 6 to clinch a 4-2 win over No. 11-ranked Princeton on Friday night (Feb. 28) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan got on the board first, winning the doubles point with victories at No. 3 and No. 2.
At No. 3, sophomore Anca Craciun and Lorenzini broke at 3-1 and that was all the Wolverine pair needed in a 6-1 victory.
Michigan's No. 2 duo of freshman Andrea Cerdan and junior Alyvia Jones raced out to a 3-0 lead, eventually grabbing a 5-2 advantage. Princeton won two straight games, including fighting off a match point to get back within a game at 5-4. Jones went back to serve for the match, winning on the deuce point to wrap up the first point for Michigan.
Princeton evened the score at 1-1 with a straight-set win at No. 2.
Cerdan nudged Michigan in front again by virtue of a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. She jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the first set en route to the win. The freshman broke for a 4-3 lead in the second set, igniting a four-game spurt to record the straight-set victory.
Senior Chiara Lommer continued her hot start to dual-match play, winning her sixth straight singles match to push Michigan's lead to 3-1. Lommer won the final two games of the first set in a 6-4 win before winning the first two games of the second for a 2-0 lead. Princeton answered with two straight games to get back on serve, keeping the set there for the next several games. Lommer got the break back at 6-5 and served out the match in the next game to put Michigan on the brink.
Needing just one more match to clinch the team win, senior Giulia Pairone rallied to force a third-set with a 7-3 second-set tiebreak win at No. 1. Jones was in a third set and Lorenzini was in the middle stages of a second set with a set in hand at No. 6.
Jones suffered a late break at No. 5 as Princeton narrowed Michigan's lead to 3-2 behind a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory.
Lorenzini came through at No. 6, winning a 7-5 second-set breaker for U-M's fourth point. She grabbed a first-set win by breaking on the deuce point for a 5-4 lead, serving out the set when she went back to the line for a 6-4 victory. In the second, the players exchanged breaks for six straight games to tie the set at 4-4. Lorenzini was able to hold her serve the next two games to stay in the set and force a breaker.
The two went back-and-forth in the tiebreaker, but Lorenzini won the final two points, sealing the breaker when Princeton's Clare McKee's second serve found the net.
Michigan will hit the road for its spring break, first heading to Austin, Texas, to face the Longhorns on Tuesday (March 3) at 2 p.m. CST. The match can be seen on the Longhorn Network.
