The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team heads West for spring break, taking a brief hiatus from dual-match play to compete at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, Friday through Sunday (March 6-8) at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, California.
Wolverine Bites
• The Pacific Coast Doubles is the second-oldest tennis event in the United States and was first held in 1890 in Monterey, California.
• This weekend will mark the first time since head coach Adam Steinberg's first season in 2015 that the Wolverines will compete at the PCD.
• The Michigan team of Ryan Fu and Patrick Maloney received a bye in the first round and will face the winner of Friday morning's match between Alexander Chieffalo and Sean Mullins (Boston College) and Jack Katzman and Robert Liu (Claremont Mudd Scripps). Fu and Maloney are scheduled to take the court at 12:45 p.m. PST on Friday. The round of 32 match will be played at 3:45 p.m. PST.
• Teddy Oosterbaan and Jonny Yaffe take on Christopher Adams and Vincent Orlando (Ball State) in the first round at 9 a.m. PST on Friday. The round of 64 match will be held at 12:45 p.m. PST.
• The two Wolverine duos have the potential to face each other in the round of 32 in the Open Doubles 33-64 bracket.
• Michigan improved one spot to No. 4 in the latest edition of the ITA rankings this week (March 3) after a 3-0 weekend that saw the Wolverines not lose a single set in 18 matchups.
• The Wolverines are 14-3 on the season and are 1-0 in the Big Ten after topping Penn State, 5-0, in the conference opener on Saturday (Feb. 29).
• Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar remain the No. 2-ranked doubles pair in the nation. They have a 13-2 dual-match record and are 25-4 overall this season. Connor Johnston and Ondrej Styler are ranked No. 73 with a 10-3 dual-match record and a 13-4 overall mark.
• Three Wolverines are ranked in singles this week, with Fenty moving up to No. 16, Styler remaining at No. 32 and Johnston at No. 90.
