NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Behind a career-best five goals from senior Chandler Kirby and three other hat tricks, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team rolled to a 20-13 win over Vanderbilt on Wednesday afternoon (March 4) at Vanderbilt Lacrosse/Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines' 20 goals marked he sixth 20-goal game in program history.
Kirby not only scored a career-best five goals but also added one assist for a career-high six points. Joining Kirby with multiple goals were Molly Garrett, Kaitlyn Mead and Caitlin Muir, who all collected four on the day. The hat trick for Muir marks her third straight game with three goals or more, while Mead produced her second four-goal outing of the season.
Senior Lilly Grass also was instrumental in the Michigan offensive output with three assists on the day. The Wolverines outshot the Commodores, 43-29, testing the Vandy goalie on 30 occasions.
Senior Maggie Handlan anchored the U-M backline with three caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Quinn Melidona also had two ground balls.
On the draw, Maggie Kane won a season-best seven draws to help the Wolverines outdraw Vandy, 20-15. Garrett, Mead and Kaley Thompson also won three.
Arielle Weissman picked up her fourth win of the season between the pipes, tying a career-best nine saves.
Vanderbilt got on the scoreboard in the first minute of the match, but after nearly 10 minutes scoreless play, the Wolverines scored five unanswered in less than five minutes, including back-to-back goals from Kirby and two from Garrett to take a 5-1 lead.
The Commordores answered with three goals to cut their deficit to one, 5-4, but the comeback was short lived. Michigan closed out the half with three more goals to take an 8-4 lead into the halftime break.
Garrett, Muir and Kirby all scored twice in the first 30 minutes, while U-M put 14 of its 23 shots on frame. The Wolverines outshot Vanderbilt, 23-9, and won the draw, 8-5, in the first half.
Michigan and Vanderbilt matched goals to start the second half before Michigan went on a 4-0 run with a pair of goals from both Mead and Kirby to take a 15-8 advantage and force a Vandy goalie change with 15:36 remaining in the contest.
For the second time in the game, the Commodores looked to reel in U-M, scoring three unanswered goals in a five-minute span to cut Michigan's lead to 16-12 before a Muir goal cut the Vanderbilt run with 6:04 left to play.
A 3-1 Wolverine run closed out the scoring and the game.
U-M will take a week away from the field before making another road trip, this time to Cincinnati, Ohio, to battle the Bearcats on Friday (March 13) at 4 p.m. inside Gettler Stadium.
