PRINCETON, N.J. -- Four athletes from the University of Michigan rowing program were named by USRowing as invitees to the 2020 Under 23 National Team Selection camp, it was announced Wednesday (April 22). Juniors Kate Burns, Grace Collins and Charlotte Powers (cox), and sophomore Jeri Rhodes were among the 46 athletes recognized by the organization.
All four athletes were part of the 2019 Big Ten Championship team that would have made a repeat run this spring had the 2020 season not been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Wolverines were ranked No. 4 in the Pocock Racing/CRCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
Despite cancellation of the 2020 international racing schedule, USRowing officials chose to acknowledge the athletes who were chosen to be part of the U-23 National Team that would have rowed at the 2020 World Rowing U-23 World Championships in Bled, Slovenia, in August.
"While understandably the pandemic has put a halt to the 2020 international racing schedule, USRowing wants to recognize those athletes who have earned invitations to our 2020 Under 23 National Team selection camps," said Matt Imes, USRowing High Performance Director. "While these athletes won't get the opportunity to represent the U.S. this summer, they make up an incredibly important part of our national team development program. We congratulate each of them on being selected for the camps and look forward to many of them representing Team USA in the future."
Burns is a two-year letterwinner in the 1V8 with Academic All-Big Ten and CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors. She helped her boat finish 10th at the 2018 NCAA Championships and third at the 2019 Championships, and also has collected two Big Ten medals (gold, 2019; silver, 2018). She rowed with the U.S. National Team in 2016 at the Junior World Championships.
Collins is a two-year letterwinner who rowed in the 1V8 in 2019 after competing with the 1V4 and 2V4 boats her freshman season. She also won a bronze medal at the 2019 NCAA Championships and a gold medal at the Big Ten Championships, having earned a conference silver with the 2V4 one spring earlier.
Powers, a CRCA first team All-American in 2019, also has two varsity letters. She coxed the 1V8 to its NCAA podium finish last spring after leading it to a Big Ten Championship. As a freshman, Powers coxed the Wolverine 2V8, which won silver at Big Tens and placed fourth at the NCAA Championships.
Rhodes earned a varsity letter in 2019 as a freshman, when she was a fixture in the 2V8 lineup which won a Big Ten title and an NCAA bronze medal. She attended the 2017 Junior National Team High Performance Camp and was a member of the 2018 Junior National Team.
