ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced its women's gymnastics 2020 season awards on Thursday (May 14) with Sierra Brooks earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year and five student-athletes receiving all-conference honors.
Brooks becomes the 14th Michigan women's gymnast to garner Freshman of the Year honors. U-M has now had five of the last seven Big Ten Freshman of the Year recipients and two straight as Natalie Wojcik won the award last season. Brooks also was named to the All-Big Ten first team after ranking second in the conference in the all-around, third on vault, tied for fifth on uneven bars and floor exercise, and eighth on balance beam.
Michigan had at least four first-team selections for the eighth straight season as sophomore Abby Brenner, freshman Gabby Wilson and Wojcik joined Brooks to give the Wolverines the most first-team selections in the conference.
Senior Lexi Funk was named to the All-Big Ten second team, as U-M tied with Minnesota for the most overall all-conference members with five gymnasts.
Brenner vaulted her way to second-team regular-season WGCA All-America honors as she tied for ninth nationally on the event and won three vault titles. She ranked second in the conference on vault, tied for 11th on floor and tied for 17th on bars to earn first-team honors for a second straight season.
Wilson had a tremendous first season for the Maize and Blue. She made her way onto the first team after ranking third in the conference on floor, tied for 6th on vault and tied for 17th on bars. Wilson won eight event titles on the year and was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on March 3.
Wojcik claimed first-team honors for a second straight season, following up her Freshman of the Year campaign with another great season. She ranked fourth in the Big Ten in the all-around, ranked second on beam and tied for second on bars, tied for fifth on floor and was ninth on vault. She led the team with 16 event or all-around titles.
Funk secured her third career all-conference honor as she has been named to the second team in back-to-back seasons. She ranked ninth in the Big Ten on beam and was 23rd on floor.
Michigan has had at least five all-conference selections in eight straight seasons.
