ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan volleyball senior outside hitter Sydney Wetterstrom and men's basketball senior forward Austin Davis were named U-M's Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2019-20 academic year by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday (May 27). The Wolverine duo was among the 28 total honorees chosen from a group of 350 students honored throughout the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship.
Wetterstrom culminated her tenure with the Wolverines by averaging career highs in kills (326), kills per set (2.76), digs (299) and digs per set (2.53), was one of five honorees to win the 2020 NCAA Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award, earned Academic All-Big Ten three times and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
In addition, she co-founded a support group called Student-Athlete Sexual Health (SASH) to create a safe and confidential environment for student-athletes affected by sexual assault to learn coping strategies and acceptance skills to regain their voice. Wetterstrom graduated with a degree in both exercise science and Spanish.
Davis, the Wolverines' true sixth man who did whatever was asked of him, was instrumental in the successes on and off the court in head coach Juwan Howard's first season. As a result, Howard asked Davis to return for a fifth year after he graduated in May with a degree in movement science.
"Big Country" is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten and Michigan Academic Achievement selection and was awarded U-M basketball's Jordan Morgan/Bodnar Brothers Award for Academic Achievement in 2019. Additionally, Davis is a mainstay volunteer in his hometown of Onsted, Michigan.
Davis had a career year, playing in 10.7 minutes off the bench in 24 games, averaging 4.9 points and 2.5 rebounds -- both career highs. He shot a team-best 69.3 percent from the floor (52-for-75) and scored his first double-figure game with career-high 11 points against Ohio State and added a career-best eight rebounds against Presbyterian.
To be eligible for the conference accolade, one member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution.
All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
