ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Following the cancellation of the end of the 2020 spring schedule as well as 10 months away from competition, University of Michigan women's golf coach Jan Dowling announced today (Thursday, Jan. 14) a six-event spring schedule for the Wolverines in 2021.
The Big Ten postponed the start of the women's golf season from fall 2020 to early 2021 due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We have never been more thrilled to announce our tournament schedule," said Dowling. "I cannot thank our administration and U-M Athletics health and welfare department, especially Darryl Conway, for implementing and leading our testing and COVID-19 protocols to safely get us back to practicing, traveling and competing. Because of these efforts, we have the opportunity to return to competing together as a team, which is what we love to do most! We've worked hard throughout the fall and winter and cannot wait for the start of an unprecedented season"
The Wolverines will get back to competition Jan. 18 as they head to Naples, Fla., for a short training trip as well as team match play event against Florida Gulf Coast.
U-M's first tournament will be Feb. 7-9 with a trip back to Florida for Purdue's Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate at Founders Golf Club in Sarasota. In addition to the collegiate event, the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate will be offering the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund scramble for families and alumni of competing schools. The event in intended to help raise some money for those Army Ranger families whose loved ones gave the ultimate sacrifice or who endured life-changing injuries.
As the calendar turns to March, the Wolverines have three events slated. First will be a West Coast trip to Sacramento, Calif., March 1-2, for UC Davis' Gunrock Invitational at Del Paso Country Club, followed by a trip to the East Coast to John's Island, S.C., for the Briar's Creek Invitational hosted by College of Charleston March 15-16 at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek.
The month will close with a visit to Phoenix, Ariz., for the PING/ASU Invitational, March 26-28, at Papago Golf Course. The event gives the Wolverines an opportunity to play an event in Arizona, which will be the host state for the NCAA Championships in May.
The regular season will close with a Midwest trip to Indiana's newly renovated Pfau Course on its campus in Bloomington. The two-day event, April 17-18, will be a chance to battle conference foes a week before doing it again at the Big Ten Championships, which will be once again held at TPC River's Bend, April 23-25, in Maineville, Ohio.
The NCAA postseason begins May 10-12, with regional play at four sites: Baton Rogue, La. (University Club); Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State Scarlet); Louisville, Ky. (University of Louisville Golf Club); and Palo Alto, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course). The NCAA Finals will be held in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 21-26, at Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course.
