ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis wrapped up action at the three-day Michigan Invitational Monday afternoon (Jan. 18) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M took a pair of doubles matches from Northwestern and took five singles matches from No. 13 Ohio State.
Michigan took a pair of doubles matches from Northwestern, highlighted by a win for graduate student Chiara Lommer and freshman Jaedan Brown over No. 57-ranked Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan. U-M made its move with a break at 3-2, with Lommer backing up the break in the next service game. That was all the space the Wolverines needed as they wrapped up a 6-2 win.
U-M's other win came courtesy of sophomore Nicole Hammond and freshman Gala Mesochoritou. The Michigan duo wasted no time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and never looking back in another 6-2 win for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan faced off against No. 13 Ohio State in singles, winning five matches against the Buckeyes.
After U-M dropped the first two matches off court, freshman Merri Kelly completed a 3-0 singles weekend for herself with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Kathleen Jones.
Classmate Kari Miller followed suit with her own 3-0 weekend after dispatching of Kolie Allen. Miller went up a break at 6-5 in the first but Allen answered right back to send it to a breaker. Miller grabbed the mini break at 4-2 en route to a 7-5 win for the first set. It was all Miller in the second as she dropped just one game in the 6-1 win.
Senior Bella Lorenzini finished her singles action with a 2-0 mark after dispatching of Tanisha Kashyap in straight sets. After cruising to a 6-2 first-set win, Lorenzini grabbed a 5-2 lead in the second before Kashyap stormed back. The set went to a breaker, where Lorenzini took control midway through with a 4-2 lead. She made good on her second match point to wrap up the tiebreaker, 7-5, and her second win of the weekend.
Lommer stormed back for a three-set win over Lisa Hofbauer, recovering from a 6-2 first-set loss to win the final two (6-3, 6-4). In the second, Lommer got the break she needed at 3-2 en route to the 6-3 win. The third set was a back-and-forth affair, with Lommer getting the early break again at 4-3. Hofbauer answered right back with a break of her own to knot the third at 4-4. Lommer rallied to hold in the next game after being down 30-40. She broke Hofbauer in the ensuing game, wrapping up her second win of the weekend.
Mesochoritou wrapped up Michigan's afternoon with a win, taking down Lina Ali in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Mesochoritou broke late in the first for a 5-4 lead, serving it out in the next game. The Wolverine freshman found herself in a 5-2 hole in the second before battling back to force a breaker. It was all Mesochoritou in the tiebreaker, as she jumped out to a 3-1 lead to take a 7-2 win.
U-M kicks of dual-match action next weekend at Georgia Tech in the ITA Kick-Off. Michigan will first face Duke on Saturday (Jan. 23) at 2 p.m.
