ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Isaiah Livers led four double-digit Wolverine scorers, and sharpshooting from beyond the arc led the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team to an 87-63 win over Maryland on Tuesday night (Jan. 19) at Crisler Center.
Michigan (12-1, 7-1 Big Ten) made 12 three-pointers, seven of which came in the first half -- with Livers making four and Mike Smith connecting on three. U-M added 30 points in the paint and scored 17 off Maryland turnovers.
The Wolverines shot 51.8 percent (29-for-56) from the field and dished out 20 assists, while blocking five shots defensively and getting six steals.
Livers (20 points) notched his seventh career 20-point performance, while adding five rebounds, three assists and one steal. Sophomore Franz Wagner notched another double-digit performance with 15 points, while tying a team-best six rebounds and adding three assists, one block and one steal.
Smith had another solid performance as the floor general, scoring 11 points -- nine of them accounting for Michigan's first 11 points -- and doling out a team-best six assists. Junior Brandon Johns Jr., had a big night off the bench, scoring 11 points and adding four rebounds, while Austin Davis had nine points.
Freshman Hunter Dickinson tied a team-high six rebounds and added a team-best three blocks.
Smith was feeling his shot early, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to give the Wolverines an 11-3 lead going into the first media break with 15:57 left in the first half. Livers followed suit and dropped two three-pointers of his own to extend the U-M lead to 17-3 with just over 14 minutes to play in the half.
With under 11 minutes to play, Davis came up with a steal and Johns finished with a triple for Michigan's sixth three-pointer of the night. The Wolverines would find one more from downtown, this time from Chaundee Brown Jr., with two minutes remaining and give Michigan a 42-25 advantage at the halftime break.
Smith led the Wolverines with 11 points in the first half, while Livers scored eight, and Wagner and Dickinson pulled down five rebounds. Michigan made seven three-pointers in the first half with three from Smith and two from Livers.
Michigan opened up the second half with back-to-back triples from Eli Brooks and Livers before Dickinson scored his first points of the night on a dunk off a feed from Livers to put U-M up, 50-31, with 17:27 left to play.
Four straight points from Davis put Michigan up by an even 20 points, 67-47, before Brooks grabbed a defensive rebound and brought it up the floor to hit Brown in the corner for a triple to extend Michigan's lead to 70-47. The bucket caused the Terps to burn a timeout with 9:09 remaining in the contest.
Michigan maintained a 20-point advantage for the final eight minutes to earn its sweep of Maryland (8-7, 2-6 Big Ten).
The Wolverines will be back in action Friday (Jan. 22) when they take on Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on FS1.
