BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In the wake of the worldwide viral phenomenon that was her come-from-behind relay win a week ago, first-year collegian Ziyah Holman turned in another eye-popping performance on Saturday (Jan. 23) as the University of Michigan women's track and field team competed on the road at Indiana's Gladstein Invitational.
In just her second race ever at the 600-meter distance, Holman claimed her first U-M school record as she blazed around the Gladstein Fieldhouse track to a 1:28.08 clocking, breaking the previous record by .08 seconds.
Hers was chief among several impressive performances -- including from a pair of her first-year cohorts -- for the Wolverines on the day as they competed against host Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue.
Holman went straight to the front and never looked back en route to her program standard, which narrowly eclipsed teammate Aurora Rynda's 1:28.16 from the 2020 Big Ten Indoor Championships prelims.
By the time the first 200 meters came and went in less than 28 seconds, Holman had already put nearly 10 meters and about a second on the rest of the field, and the margin would only balloon from there.
She crossed over 400 meters in around 56 seconds and more than 30 meters clear of the pack, and gutted out the last 200 meters in just over 31 seconds to bring home the record-setting win. Her nearest competitor needed five and a half additional seconds to cover the same distance.
Though the 600-meter event is not contested at the NCAA Championships, it is part of the Big Ten Indoor Championships program. Teammate Rynda is the two-time defending champion in the event, giving the Wolverines significant firepower over that distance.
Holman led a slew of young Wolverines to strong efforts on the day.
Another first-year collegian in Hannah Waller accounted for two victories for Michigan. She clocked 7.48 for the win in her collegiate 60-meters debut -- moving her to No. 6 in program history overall and No. 3 among first-years -- and followed that up an hour later with a victory in the long jump at 5.32m (17 feet, 5.5 inches).
Redshirt first-year Samantha Tran led a 1-2-3 Michigan sweep at the 3,000-meter distance, pulling away in the final kilometer to cross the line in 9:43.63. Hot in pursuit in the late stages of the race were Jena Metwalli in 9:46.35 and Kayla Windemuller in 9:48.71.
The Wolverines were similarly strong in the mile, led by first-year collegian Katelynne Hart in a runner-up 4:44.46. Only Shannon Osika has debuted faster as a Michigan miler in program history.
Right behind her in third was All-American Alice Hill in 4:45.08, followed by sixth-place Kathryn House in a career-best 4:46.92 and cross country All-American Ericka VanderLende in 4:47.05 for seventh.
In addition to Waller's long jump win, the Wolverines also posted numerous top-three finishes in the field.
Amanda Schaare and Erin Connor posted all-time top-10 shot put performances, finishing second at 15.89m (52-1.5) for No. 4 in program history and third at 14.92m (48-11.5) for No. 8, respectively.
Katt Miner cleared a season's best 1.73m (5-8) to finish second in a high jump tiebreak, while Jessica Mercier cleared a season's best 3.92m (12-10.25) for third in a pole vault tiebreak. Both Miner and Mercier are former Big Ten medalists in their respective events.
Making her 2021 debut was 2020 Big Ten Indoor Championships weight thrower Courtney Jacobsen, who finished runner-up at 18.59m (61-0).
Michigan will return home for two consecutive meets at the U-M Indoor Track Building for the B1G Multi-Event Invitational (Jan. 30) and the Wolverine Invitational (Feb. 6). The cross country team will be competing Jan.30 at the Big Ten Championships in Shelbyville, Ind.
