BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team put together an electric 2-1 comeback victory at Indiana as senior Derick Broche scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute of the match Friday evening (Oct. 1) at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Wolverines were awarded a throw-in that Declan Gaffney tossed inside the 18-yard box onto the head of Evan Rasmussen, who flicked it back to Broche, and he headed in the game-winning goal. The win at Indiana (5-3-1, 2-2-0 Big Ten) marked the first victory for Michigan (5-4-1, 2-1-1 Big Ten) over the Hoosiers since the 2013 campaign and the third overtime contest between the two squads in the last four meetings.
Rasmussen ended the night with three points, scoring the tying goal in the second half and assisting on the Broche game-winner, while Gaffney and Umar Farouk Osman each added an assist on the evening.
Freshman goalkeeper Hayden Evans was a key part of the Wolverine victory, making seven saves against the powerful Indiana offense to earn his fourth win of the season.
In a first half that did not generate many opportunities for either team, Evans made three saves, including a big stop in the 36th minute followed by a clutch block and clear from Brennan Callow to keep the match scoreless heading into the halftime break.
Rasmussen and Michael Leon put back-to-back shots on frame in the 53rd minute, but both were picked up by the Indiana keeper before the Hoosiers found a one-on-one opportunity in which Evans came out and made the stop in the box.
A foul inside the box proved costly for the Wolverines as the penalty kick found its way into the bottom-left corner of the net in the 68th minute to put Indiana up 1-0.
With under 10 minutes to play, Osman sent a ball into the box as Rasmussen made a perfect run and got his head on the ball while diving toward the goal to tie the game at 1.
Michigan returns to the friendly confines of U-M Soccer Stadium on Tuesday (Oct. 5) at 8 p.m., when it hosts Michigan State for the Big Bear Trophy. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
