ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played in-state foe Michigan State University to a 2-2 tie at U-M Soccer Stadium Tuesday evening (Oct. 5) to retain the Big Bear Trophy.
Michigan (5-4-2, 2-1-1 Big Ten) sold out U-M Soccer Stadium for the first time since Sept. 17, 2017, also a game against Michigan State.
Junior Brennan Callow scored his first career goal off a pass from Umar Farouk Osman late in the second half to knot the game, while Michigan's first goal came by way of a MSU own goal. As a team, Michigan had eight shots on goal compared to Michigan State's four.
Goalkeeper Hayden Evans made two saves on the night, including one late in the match to keep Michigan within one.
Michigan took an early lead in the fourth minute when Bryce Blevins set a cross into the 18-yard box that knocked off the head of a Spartan and into the net to gift the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines did not let up as Derick Broche sent a rocket toward the net that just ticked off the gloves of the keeper in the 13th minute before Christian Pulselli had his shot bounce off the post. Blevins then sent one just inches high of the crossbar in the 35th minute.
U-M maintained its lead and headed into the locker room with a 1-0 advantage and a 6-3 advantage in the shot category.
Michigan State (4-5-2, 0-2-2 Big Ten) found two quick goals to start the second half to take a 2-1 lead over the Wolverines in the 53rd minute. Evans made a big kick save in the 65th minute to keep U-M within one of the Spartans before Blevins put a shot on frame less than four minutes later that was saved by the MSU keeper.
The Maize and Blue earned a corner that was cleared out to Osman 50 yards out. He took the opportunity to send the ball back into the box as Callow leaped into the air and buried the ball down and in for the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute.
Neither team could find the golden goal in remaining eight minutes of the second half, sending the Wolverines into their second overtime match in as many games. Inaki Rodriguez had U-M's best chance in the first overtime period and neither team was able to put a shot on frame in the second overtime period, ending the match in a 2-2 draw.
Michigan will hit the road for a Sunday (Oct. 10) contest at Penn State. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
