ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Brennan Callow scored a second-half goal, while goalkeeper Hayden Evans picked up his first career shutout as the University of Michigan men's soccer team earned an important 1-0 victory over Wisconsin on Friday night (Oct. 15) under the lights at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines scored the first goal the Badgers (7-3-3, 3-1-1) have allowed in five games and handed them their first Big Ten Conference loss of the season. With the win, Michigan collects three points to run its total to 10, which moves it in a tie for third place in the conference standings with Wisconsin and U-M having two league matches remaining.
Michigan (6-5-2, 3-2-1 Big Ten) capitalized on a corner in the second half when Bryce Blevins sent the ball into the 18-yard box. After a scrum in front of the net, Declan Gaffney passed the ball off the end line to Callow, who tipped it in off his toe into the bottom-left corner of the net for what became the game-winning goal.
The Wolverines tallied seven shots, with just one on goal, while Evans made six saves on the night for the Maize and Blue, including a pair in the final two minutes of the match to secure the U-M win.
Michigan had two solid opportunities in the first half as Umar Farouk Osman fired a shot wide in the ninth minute and Marc Ybarra struck a laser that flew just above the crossbar in the 37th minute.
Coming out of the halftime break, Evans came up with an important save, diving to his right and scooping the ball to keep the match scoreless.
The Wolverines continued to press in the second half, earning a corner kick in the 67th minute of the match, when Callow deposited his second goal of the season to put Michigan ahead 1-0..
Wisconsin increased its pace during the closing minutes of the game, putting two shots on frame, but Evans made two impressive saves to end any chance of a Badger equalizer.
Michigan will conclude non-conference play on Monday (Oct. 18) when it travels to Akron, Ohio, to take on the Zips. Match time is set for 7 p.m., and the contest will be streamed live on ESPN+.
