ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned a decisive 3-0 shutout against No. 3 Rutgers on Friday afternoon (Oct. 22) in front of 514 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The victory was U-M's fourth over a top-10 opponent this season -- and third over its last five games.
Rutgers (12-3, 4-2 Big Ten) put a couple shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the opening quarter, then it was all Michigan for the remainder of the contest. The Wolverines outshot the Scarlet Knights 14-3 and outcornered them 4-0 and did not allow a sustained attack inside its circle in the second half.
Freshman Abby Tamer broke the scoreless tie in the final minute of the first half, at 29:24, after the crashing the circle from the right side. Rutgers' goalkeeper, Gianna Glatz, stepped out to kick the ball, but it went directly to Tamer, who pulled it to her reverse stick and beat Glatz with a rocket to her five hole. It was Tamer's fourth goal of the season.
Michigan (13-1, 4-1 Big Ten) pulled away with two markers in the third quarter. Sophomore Anouk Veen buried a second-effort corner shot at 37:34 for her fifth goal. Her initial shot was blocked on the right side of the arc, but she quickly corralled the ball and swept a shot high over the sprawling Glatz. It was initially deemed too high, but U-M argued it was the second corner shot -- not the first -- and earned the call on referral.
The Wolverines struck again less than five minutes later, at 42:15, on a tight-angle shot from senior Kathryn Peterson's for her fifth goal of the season. Peterson carried the ball into circle from the left baseline, fed it to Abby Tamer, then got it back on the baseline to just sneak it between Glatz and the post. A Rutgers defender nearly saved it on the goal line, but it was called over the line and good.
Senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned two saves -- both in the first quarter -- to secure her third complete-game shutout of the season and U-M's fifth overall. Rutgers' Glatz stopped nine of 12 U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines will honor their 2021 graduating senior class when they host No. 8 Maryland for their regular-season home finale on Sunday (Oct. 24) at Ocker Field. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start and will be streamed live on B1G+. Admission is free.
