ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team suffered its first home loss of the season in its home finale, dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 8 Maryland on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 24) in front of 471 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines outshot the Terrapins 13-9 and outcornered them 8-0 but struggled to finish on its opportunities in the circle.
Maryland (12-5, 3-4 Big Ten) led for most of the contest after scoring on a break into the circle at the 10:20 mark, as Taylor Mason converted on a cross-cage shot from the right side of the scoring arc.
Senior Sofia Southam evened the scored midway through the third quarter, taking advantage of a flurry following a penalty corner to bang in her team-best 17th goal of the season. Southam took the initial corner shot, but it was blocked and caromed to the right side of the circle, where junior Nina Apoola corralled it and pushed it to the front of the cage, where Southam laid out to one time it in.
However, Maryland responded quickly, retaking the lead just five minutes later, at 42:19, when Bibi Donraadt tipped in the go-ahead goal on a ball from outside the circle.
Senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned four saves, while Maryland's Noelle Frost posted six stops.
Michigan (13-2, 5-2 Big Ten) will wrap the regular season on the road next Friday (Oct. 29), traveling to State College, Pa., to face No. 5 Penn State at 6 p.m. at the PSU Field Hockey Complex. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
