ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team came out firing on all cylinders in its season opener against Oakland, winning 15 of 16 events to come away with a 189-105 dual-meet win at Canham Natatorium.
The meet started with the Wolverines winning the 200-yard medley relay with their top two teams. The quartet of junior Andrew Trepanier, freshman Brendan Fitzpatrick, sophomore Charlie Morici and sophomore Bence Szabados, and the foursome of senior Eric Storms, senior Mason Hunter, junior River Wright and sophomore James LeBuke both touched the wall in 1:29.06 to kick off the event with a first-place tie and 15 points.
Freshman Connor Hunt owned the distance events, easily winning the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle events. The Ridgefield, Conn., native touched the wall in 9:14.53 in the 1000, nearly 20 full seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, and followed that with a nine-second victory in the 500 in a time of 4:30.90. LeBuke won the 100 free in 45.09, and also touched the wall first in the 200 free in 1:39.26.
Freshman Cameron Gammage won both diving events on the afternoon, turning in scores of 334.28 on 1-meter and a 423.60 on the 3-meter.
The Wolverines won both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly races thanks to Szabados and redshirt senior Spencer Carl. Szabados finished the 100 in 47.99 seconds, while Carl touched the wall first with a 1:49.33 in the 200.
U-M also took first in both backstroke events, as Storms finished first in the 100 with a time of 49.59 seconds, and freshman Jacque Wenger took the 200 in a 1:50.57.
Trepanier won the 50 free in 20.58 seconds, while senior AJ Bornstein finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:01.05. The other individual winner for the Maize and Blue was junior Jack McCurdy, who won the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.64.
Michigan wrapped the meet in the same way it started: a dominant performance from the relay team. The quartet of Szabados, Wright, freshman Niklas Eberly and LeBuke won the 400 free relay in a time of 2:59.55.
Michigan will return to action on Friday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. when they take on Missouri and Purdue at the Boilermakers' November Triple Dual in West Lafayette, Ind.
