ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team raised its 2021 NCAA Sweet 16 banner pregame and breezed past St. Francis Brooklyn, 82-46, Saturday afternoon (Nov. 13) at Crisler Center.
Senior Naz Hillmon led a trio of double-figure scorers with 19 points on 9-for-10 shooting, while freshman Laila Phelia turned in a career-best 11 and junior Maddie Nolan had 10. Senior Emily Kiser just missed a double-double with nine points and a career-high 12 boards. Michigan shot 49.3 percent (34-for-69) and outrebounded the Terriers 47-30.
Senior Leigha Brown found Hillmon down low for consecutive buckets to start the contest before she grabbed a loose ball and converted in transition, forcing an early Terrier timeout at the 8:23 mark.
Michigan held a 25-7 lead after 10 minutes, using an 11-0 run during the frame and getting eight points from Hillmon on 4-for-4 shooting to take the early advantage.
The Terriers hit back-to-back three-pointers in the second quarter, forcing a Michigan timeout at the 8:08 mark and its lead at 29-13. The Wolverines responded out of the break, holding St. Francis Brooklyn to just three points the rest of the quarter while scoring 20.
U-M hit the break with a 49-16 lead after holding the Terriers to a pair of single-digit quarters. Hillmon paced the Wolverines at the break with 15 points.
Michigan's lead swelled to 40 in the third quarter as Michigan scored the first seven points of the period on layups from Kiser and Hillmon, with a Nolan triple sandwiched in between.
All 14 Wolverines that dressed saw action, with 12 finding the scoring column. The sophomore class of Whitney Sollom, Elise Stuck and Cameron Williams each scored their first points of the season to highlight the effort of the bench.
Michigan will conclude its three-game seasoning-opening homestand Tuesday (Nov. 16) at 6 p.m., hosting UMass Lowell as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
