BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- University of Michigan seniors Katie Anderson and Sofia Southam were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's 2021 Division I Senior Team, the organization announced Monday (Nov. 15). U-M was one of just six schools to earn multiple representatives on the 38-person list.
Anderson has appeared in 75 games to date over her Michigan career and started all 39 games at midfield over the last two seasons. She boasts eight career goals, including two in the postseason this year, and 12 assists, primarily as the stick stopper on U-M's corner attack unit. Anderson was named to the Big Ten and NCAA All-Tournament Teams last season and, most memorably, scored the clinching goal in the Wolverines' semifinal shootout win against Louisville.
Southam, the 2021 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, boasted 23 goals and three assists over 19 games played -- the second-best scoring average in the country this season. She has appeared in 71 games over the last four years as a forward and midfielder and owns 34 career goals and 10 assists. She was also named to the All-Big Ten first team this fall and is a two-time Big Ten All-Tournament selection.
All 10 Division I conferences and five NCAA regions that sponsor field hockey are represented on the list of 2021 honorees. The selected student-athletes were nominated by their NFHCA member coach and were chosen based on their career accomplishments.
The members of the 2021 Division I Senior Team were initially announced during a live video presentation featuring member coaches on Monday afternoon. In lieu of the traditional coach-led trophy presentation at the NFHCA Senior Game, which was cancelled due to limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, coaches were given the opportunity to announce the name of their Senior Team honoree(s).
U-M wrapped its 2021 season with a 16-5 record and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, falling to Harvard, 1-0 in a shootout, last night at Ocker Field.
