ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team fell 67-65Â to Seton Hall in a Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup on Tuesday (Nov. 16) at Crisler Center.
In another classic Big Ten vs. Big East battle, the Wolverines and Pirates went back-and-forth for the full 40 minutes, posting nine ties and 12 lead changes throughout the contest. After building an 11-point second-half lead, the Michigan advantage was whittled away by the Seton Hall, as it capitalized on three-point shooting and late free throws to secure the victory.
Hunter Dickinson led the Wolverines with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds, while Eli Brooks had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. DeVante' Jones recorded his 13th career double-double with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds -- his 11th career 10-plus rebounding game.
For the first time this season, Michigan (2-1) did not score the game's first points and trailed the Pirates early 5-2 before tying the game at 8 heading to the first media timeout. After the break, the Wolverines took their first lead of the game thanks to a layup from Jones to make it a 12-10 advantage. Michigan led by as many as four before Seton Hall (3-0) cut the lead back to one heading into the second media break.
As the Pirates regained the lead 18-15, Brooks ended a Maize and Blue dry spell with back-to-back jumpers to put the Wolverines back on top 19-18 with seven minutes remaining in the half. With Dickinson scoring four straight points to put U-M up 23-21, Seton Hall drilled its fifth three-pointer of the half, to go up back up one. Coming off the bench, Kobe Bufkin provided a spark as he quickly scored four points to give U-M a 31-28 halftime lead.
Starting the second half, four of U-M's starting five scored as to go on an 8-1 run and put Michigan up 10, 39-29. Despite a 5-0 run by the Pirates, Dickinson and Jones keyed a 6-0 run to give U-M an 11-point advantage, but the Pirates continued to push back cutting U-M's advantage to 47-40 with just under 12 minutes left in the half.
After going 0-for-11 from long range, Brooks sank Michigan's first three-pointer, and Terrance Williams II followed with another of his own to push the lead back to nine. However, Seton Hall answered with another triple, making the score 55-49 with 8:26 left in regulation.
As U-M missed shots, Seton Hall continued to put points on the board and made it a one-possession game at 57-54 with just over five minutes to go. A three-minute U-M scoring drought helped Seton Hall tie the game before a Jones long-range bucket pushed the Wolverines up 60-57.
Seton Hall continued to drain key three-pointers, with its ninth of the night tying the game at 60. Despite a Brooks layup under pressure, the Pirates answered again with a jumper of their own. Jones was then called for a blocking foul with 1:15 on the clock and led to Seton Hall reclaiming the lead 63-62.
On the following possession, Dickinson delivered a pivotal pair of free throws to give Michigan a 64-63 lead. Heading down the court, Jones picked up another defensive foul, his fourth of the night, which led to two made free throws which put U-M behins 65-64 with 30 seconds to play. Scrambling to stop the clock, Jones was forced to commit his fifth and final foul, sending Seton Hall to the line again where it increased their lead, 66-64 with 10 seconds remaining. Williams drew a foul with 0.8 seconds remaining but missed the first foul shot. He tried to miss the second, but it went in, and as Seton Hall closed out with the 67-65 win.
