Wolverine Bites
• Michigan claimed bonus points in six of nine wins in its dual opener against CSU Bakersfield (Nov. 14), including first-period pins from senior/junior Max Maylor (174 pounds) and graduate student Patrick Brucki (197). Brucki, a 2019 NCAA All-American who transferred in from Princeton this season, has earned bonus points in four of his five wins this season with two pins and two major decisions.
• Sophomore/freshman Fidel Mayora and junior/sophomore Blake Querio earned victories in their dual debuts last Sunday (Nov. 14). Mayora, who posted a perfect 4-0 record in extra matches last year, cruised to a 12-4 major decision at 157 pounds. He owns three bonus wins already this season.
• Freshman Chance Lamer headlined the Wolverines' effort at the MSU Open (Nov. 6), posting a 4-0 record en route to the 141-pound title. He is the third Wolverine true freshman to win his collegiate debut over the past three events; Will Lewan (157) and Mason Parris (Hwt) captured individual titles in 2018. Wrestling unattached, Lamer earned a decisive 10-4 win over Cal Poly's Lawrence Saenz in the championship match with four takedowns off single-leg attacks, including two in the third period, and 1:39 in riding-time advantage.
• Michigan returned four Wolverine All-Americans and 10 total NCAA qualifiers in 2021-22. Among the returners are Tokyo Olympians and graduate students Myles Amine (184 pounds) and Stevan Micic 141), who have combined for seven All-America honors over their collegiate careers, but will not appear in competition for the Maize and Blue until second semester. Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine (165) and Parris both earned All-America honors last season for the first time in their careers.
• Several returning Wolverine starters are slated to change weight classes this season. Myles Amine, who claimed three All-America finishes at 174 pounds before jumping up to 197 last season, will move down to 184 pounds for his final season. Stevan Micic, a three-time All-American at 133 pounds, bumps up to 141 this year after appearing at 57kg (125 pounds) at the Olympics. Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin will move up a weight to 133 pounds, while graduate student Drew Mattin, who has qualified for NCAAs at both 125 and 141 pounds, comes back down to 133.
• Head coach Sean Bormet is in his fourth season at the helm of the Wolverine program. Under his guidance, the Wolverines have compiled a 26-8 dual-meet record, including an 18-6 mark in Big Ten duals, and has posted back-to-back fifth-place NCAA finishes in 2019 and 2021. Michigan has boasted eight different All-Americans over the last three seasons.
