The University of Michigan ice hockey team (10-6-0, 8-6-0-1-0 Big Ten) resumes action after a two-week department-wide activities shutdown during which three of its games were postponed. The No. 8-ranked Wolverines look to hit the ground running, hosting No. 7 Wisconsin (13-7-0, 11-5-0-0-1 Big Ten) on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 13-14). Saturday's game (Feb. 13) is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Big Ten Network, while Sunday's matchup (Feb. 14) is slated for 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
Honoring the 1996 National Champs
On Saturday (Feb. 13) the Michigan ice hockey program will honor the 1996 NCAA championship team on the 25th year anniversary of their title. Things to Know
• The Wolverines hold an 80-62-13 advantage in an all-time series against the Badgers and have won the last five games against UW, including a pair of wins in Madison in November when Thomas Bordeleau scored a highlight-reel goal in the series finale to secure a sweep.
• U-M put together back-to-back sweeps over their rivals from Ohio State and Notre Dame before the pause, and U-M is 5-1 since January.
• Five freshmen sit atop the Michigan scoring chart, led by 18 points from forwards Kent Johnson (six goals, 12 assists) and Thomas Bordeleau (5G, 13A), followed by Matty Beniers (4G, 9A, 13 points), Brendan Brisson (5G, 7A, 12 points) and blue-liner Owen Power (2G, 10A, 12 points).
• Defensemen Nick Blankenburg (11) and Cam York (10) also chip in double-digit points.
• Michael Pastujov is the team's leading goal scorer with seven markers.
• Goaltender Strauss Mann captured his ninth career shutout against Ohio State. The junior has a .927 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average. Freshman Erik Portillo has built up a .941 save percentage and a 1.65 GAA in just over 181 minutes of action, four appearances and two starts.
• Michigan's high-flying offense averages 3.62 goals per game (10th nationally), while the defense has limited opponents to just 2.06 goals per game (7th nationally).
• On special teams, the Wolverines' power play ranks third nationally converting 13 of 46 chances (28.3 percent). The penalty kill is 42-for-54 (77.8 percent, 35th nationally).
Getting to Know the Badgers
• No. 7 Wisconsin is coming off of a sweep of Minnesota last weekend in Minneapolis to improve to 11-5-0 in Big Ten play. The Badgers are atop the conference standings with 34 points (11-5-0-0-1).
• A trio of forwards, Cole Caufield, Linus Weissbach and Dylan Holloway pace the Badgers offense with more than 20 points apiece. Caufield leads the way with 33 points (17 goals, 16 assists) while Weissbach has contributed 26 points (8G, 18A) and Holloway has posted 23 points (7G, 16A) in eight fewer games.
• Wisconsin averages 3.95 goals per game, the best in the nation.
• Grad transfer Robbie Beydoun and freshman Cameron Rowe have manned the blue paint for the Badgers. Beydoun has a 7-6-0 record with a .915 save percentage and 2.78 goals-against average, but Rowe (6-1-0) has come on strong of late with a .948 save percentage and a 1.50 GAA.
• Wisconsin's power-play unit is red-hot, leading the nation by scoring at a 31.1 percent clip (19-for-61).
Last Time Out
Michigan swept Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Jan. 21-22. On Thursday (Jan. 21), the Wolverines won, 5-1, after netting four goals in the second period. Kent Johnson scored twice and Owen Power collected three assists. Erik Portillo stopped 29 saves in the win. On Friday night (Jan. 22) it was Strauss Mann picking up the win, making 35 saves in a 3-1 Michigan win. Michael Pastujov scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season, while Thomas Bordeleau had two helpers.
