Wolverine Bites
• After having is 2020 spring season canceled following the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 7-8), U-M returns after nearly a year away from tournament play. In U-M coach Zach Barlow's first season at the helm of the Wolverines, the Maize and Blue played in seven events, posting a season-best fourth-place finish at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate (Oct. 21-22, 2019).
• Michigan coach Zach Barlow begins his second season leading the Wolverines after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater Illinois (2014-19). In his time in Champaign, Barlow assisted coach Mike Small to guide the Fighting Illini to five consecutive Big Ten titles, win three NCAA regional championships, five consecutive NCAA finals and three match-play semifinal appearances.
• Brent Ito returns for a fifth and graduate year after the NCAA allowed an extra year of eligibility following the cancellation of the remainder of last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a senior, Ito was having a career year as he led U-M with a 72.67 scoring average -- which was nearly two strokes less than any other season in Ann Arbor. Last season, he led the Wolverines in three events with top-25 finishes. He began with his first career top-10 finish, tying for ninth (212, -1) at the Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 16-17) and followed with a tie for 11th (216, +3) at the Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 23-24). He closed the run posting a tie for 23rd (214, +1) at the Fighting Irish Classic (Oct. 7-8).
• After his career season a year ago, Ito was named to the All-Big Ten second team. His conference accolade was the first of his career, the 21st in program history and the first for a Wolverine since 2018 (Kyle Mueller).
• Charlie Pilon returns for his final season after leading the Wolverines in two events and boosted his career total to four after he won the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate with a career-low 205 (-8) total. Pilon had six sub-par rounds, including a U-M-low 67 (-4) in the first round at the Royal Oaks and finished with a career-low 73.00 per round. Playing in 27 career events, he has started the last 25 straight, spanning over three seasons.
• After recovering from an ankle injury, Patrick Sullivan is ready for a breakout junior season after highlighting his return last season by leading the Wolverines at the Big Ten Match Play Championship with a perfect 4-0 record. His feat matched the Wolverines' best record at the conference match play event as he equaled the unbeaten 2015 performance (4-0) by U-M great Kyle Mueller. Overall, nine different Wolverines have finished with an unblemished record at the Big Ten's match play event. Sullivan played in four events in 2019-20.
• Fellow junior Ben Dunne started all six of his events last season and averaged a career-best 75.39 per round -- nearly one and a half strokes better than his freshman year average (77.05). He fired a career-low 69 (-2) in the final round of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate which helped him post a career-low 220 in his home state of Texas (Dallas).
• Michigan welcomes four freshmen this season as Will Anderson (Portage, Mich.), Ben Hoagland (Evansville, Ind.), Jude Kim (Plantation, Fla.) and Jack O'Donnell (Cohasset, Mass.). Anderson earned MIGCA All-State Division I first-team honors (2018, '19) before his senior year was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During his career, he was a two-time individual qualifier for the MHSAA Division I Finals. Hoagland was a two-time qualifier for the IHSAA State Finals, before his senior season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was a two-time SIAC honoree (2018, '19) as well as a three-time Academic All-SIAC (2017, '18, '19). Kim played at American Heritage School and helped it to the FHSAA Class 2A championship (2016), followed by three straight runner-up titles (2017, '18, '19). O'Donnell led Boston College HS to the 2017 Massachusetts Division I State Championship; first in school history. Individually, he was the medalist runner-up (2017; 69, -1).
