ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team began its 2020-21 campaign with a 3-1 loss (22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 22-25) against the No. 11 Purdue on Saturday night (Feb. 13) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) was led by freshman Jess Mruzik, who registered a team-high 21 kills and added seven digs. Junior captain Paige Jones had 15 kills and eight digs.
A strong contingent of newcomers led the U-M effort, with freshman setter Scottee Johnson marking 35 assists and 11 digs, while Hannah Grant had 22 digs and seven helpers on the night. Five Wolverines made their U-M debuts: Johnson, Grant, Mruzik, Brooke Humphrey and Kendall Murray.
Trailing two sets to none and 24-20 in the third set, U-M rallied behind Humphrey's service, scoring the final six points to force a fourth set.
The Wolverines were unable to carry that momentum and Purdue (3-4, 3-4 Big Ten) won the foruth set, 25-22, to finish the contest.

U-M will return to action Sunday night (Feb. 14) against the Boilermakers to finish off their two-match set at Cliff Keen Arena. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
