ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team dropped a five-set matchup, 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-12), against Maryland on Friday night (Feb. 19) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (1-3, 1-3 Big Ten) won the first set, 25-23, behind five kills from freshman Jess Mruzik and four kills apiece from junior Paige Jones and sophomore Jess Robinson.
U-M dropped the next two sets, 25-23 and 25-22 before rallying to win the fourth set by a 25-18 score. Jones led Michigan in the fourth set with five kills, while freshman setter Scottee Johnson and classmate Hannah Grant had four assists apiece.
In the final set, the sides were tied on four occasions and there were four lead changes, but a late charge by the Terrapins (1-8, 1-8 Big Ten) aided by a trio of kills from Maryland's Erika Pritchard pushed the Terps to the victory in the final set.
Jones finished with 18 kills, and Mruzik added 14 on a .243 hiting percentage. Robinson was U-M's most efficient attacker with 13 kills, hitting at a .500 clip.
Michigan was without head coach Mark Rosen and associate head coach Leisa Rosen out of an abundance of caution and contact tracing protocol. Assistant coach Jerome Fraisse filled in as head coach for the Wolverines.
U-M will close out its weekend series with Maryland on Saturday (Feb. 20). First serve at Cliff Keen Arena is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the match will be streamed live on BIg Ten Network Plus.
