WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan divers kicked off their portion of the Big Ten Championships on Thursday (Feb. 25) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The men competed on one-meter, while the women competed on three-meter.
Men
Senior Ross Todd entered the day as the defending champion on the one-meter springboard and had to fight to earn his spot in the final. He sat in 10th with one round to go in preliminaries after scoring only a 31.50 on his fourth dive (205c), but did just enough to hold onto the eighth spot and qualify. Todd was sharp in the final and improved on his seed, scoring 378.60 to finish fifth overall, surpassing his 315.80 from the morning.
"Both of those guys did what they needed to do," said diving coach Mike Hilde. "It's tough competition in the Big Ten, especially with a lot of returners from last year. They did about as well as they could have and really held their own. It shows that Michigan diving is a consistent team, not just a one-year wonder."
Senior Chris Canning provided valuable depth points with a 10th-place finish (311.70). Together, the two top-10 finishes started the men's team off with 42 points ahead of next week's championship meet.
Women
A total of five Wolverines brought back points for the team, led by sophomore Lucy Hogan and senior Camryn McPherson. Hogan, who just missed making the final after taking ninth in preliminaries, finished 11th (312.05), while McPherson was 16th (274.20).
Also scoring points were senior Nikki Canale in 19th (271.15), sophomore Lauren Cheetham in a tie for 20th (268.80) and junior Allie Klein in 23rd (263.75).
"Five-out-of-six scored. In the grand scheme of things, that's a great team effort," said Hilde. "Lucy really stepped up and was a clear highlight. And shoutout to Camryn who, coming off hip surgery and not being able to train much this year, really showed a lot of leadership and toughness."
All told, the five divers combined for 39.5 points toward the team total.
