BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With a second straight season-high-tying 21 points from sophomore guard/forward Franz Wagner and a double-double from senior guard/forward Isaiah Livers (16 points, 10 rebounds), the third-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team won its seventh straight game today (Saturday, Feb. 27) with a 73-57 road victory at Indiana in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Wagner went 6-for-9 from the field and 8-for-8 from the free throw line while adding six rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist. It was Wagner's fourth 20+ point game of the season and third in his last four games. Livers drained four three-pointers, including three straight to start the second half, en route to his second double-double of the season and matched his career high with 10 rebounds.
Graduate transfer guard Mike Smith added 14 points, going 4-for-5 from the field with a pair triples. He added three assists and three rebounds. Freshman center Hunter Dickinson closed with a quiet 13 points, seven rebounds, a block and two assists.
For a second straight game the Wolverines held their opponent's top player well below his season averages. Indiana's Trayce Jackson-Davis (20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds) was held to just 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting while grabbing four rebounds. The Hoosiers (12-12, 7-10 B1G) were led by Aljami Durham's 15 points.
In the first half, the Wolverines (18-1, 13-1 B1G) concentrated on driving downhill as they were able to build a nine-point (42-33) lead at the break. Many of U-M's points came from the free throw line as the Wolverines were 16-for-18 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Hoosiers, 22-12, in the first half.
As the second half began, U-M switched its offense to its outside game as Livers knocked down three consecutive three-pointers and had a highlight-reel rebound and dunk as the Wolverines saw their lead swell to as many as 18 points in the second half. The Wolverines shot 50 percent (13-for-26) in the second 20 minutes and made their only shot at the foul line.
The Wolverines will close their regular season with three games in a six-day span. First, the Maize and Blue return to Ann Arbor and host No. 5 Illinois on Tuesday (March 2) at Crisler Center. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff on ESPN. U-M will then have a home-and-home series with Michigan State to finish out the regular season -- at Crisler Center (Thursday, March 4) and at the Breslin Center (Sunday, March 7).
