JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. -- With three top-25 Wolverines individually, the University of Michigan women's golf team recorded its second straight top-five team finish, placing fifth with an 890 54-hole total at the College of Charleston's Briar's Creek Invitational played Monday and Tuesday (March 15-16) at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek.
In the second tournament of U-M's abridged season, the Wolverines used first-round tallies of 74 by junior Ashley Lau and freshman Monet Chun to open Monday's 36-hole day with a 300 and position the Maize and Blue second in the 18-team field. The day's second round was eventually suspended due to darkness. As the field returned today to complete the second round, Chun's even-par 72 and a second 74 from Lau gave U-M a 302 as the Wolverines stayed in the second spot at 602 total.
Heading straight into the final round, sophomore Hailey Borja used four birdies to post a season-low 70 (-2), while Lau's three-birdie effort gave her a season-low 71 (-1) to help the Maize and Blue tally a even-par 288 that was just the seventh lowest of the day. Despite the season-low team tally, U-M fell to fifth.
"We played very well in some difficult, windy conditions for the first two rounds," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We stayed super patient and limited our errors, which put us in a position to win on the final day. That was a great experience for our group. We didn't have our very best stuff today as a team, but there are plenty of positives to take with us for the remainder of the spring."
Lau finished as the top Wolverine for the first time since her freshman season (April 2019), as her 219 (74-74-71) total gave her a seventh-place individual finish. Overall, she was tied for second with 39 pars, and it is the sixth time she has closed as the top Wolverine. Her top-10 also gives the Maize and Blue an individual top-10 finish in two straight events.
After opening her career with a tie for 12th (Florida State Match Up), Chun followed with her second straight top-15 finish as her 221 (74-72-75) total put her in a tie for 13th. She was tied for second in the 93-player field with 39 pars.
Borja's under-par final round boosted her into a tie for 25th with a 224 (77-77-70) total. Rounding out the starting five were senior Ashley Kim, who tied for 53rd (75-81-74/230), and sophomore Mikaela Schulz, who tied for 58th (79-79-73/231).
The Wolverines will head west for their next tournament in a week and a half as they will play in the PING/ASU Invitational, Friday through Sunday, March 26-28. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
