BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team placed a program-record 14 Wolverines on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Squad, the organization announced on Thursday (March 18).
The National Academic Squad program honors student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2020-21 academic year. Michigan's honorees include Nina Apoola, Katie Begley, Clare Brush, Kate Burney, Katelyn Clarke, Tina D'Anjolell, Gillian Dumont, Maya Gompper, Rosie Hope, Kate McLaughlin, Kragen Metz, Kathryn Peterson, Lindsey Stagg and Emma Tamer.
Brush, a Masters of Management student who previously earned her B.A. in economics last spring, became the third Wolverine in program history to be named to the NFHCA academic team five times, joining Molly Maloney and Sammy Gray, while Gompper, an elementary education major, earned her fourth citation in as many years.
Michigan has placed at least five individuals on the national academic team in each of the last 12 seasons. The program's previous best was nine individual honorees, which it did in each of the last three years -- 2017, '18, '19. Fifteen Wolverines previously were honored this year with Academic All-Big Ten distinction.
The NFHCA will announce three more Division I academic awards this spring -- the Scholars of Distinction will be announced on March 25, while and the National Academic Team Awards will be released on March 29. The NFHCA Division I National Scholar-Athlete will be announced on June 15, 2021.
The Wolverines carry a 2-1 record in their unique second-semester 2020-21 season and will host Northwestern for a two-game series this Saturday (March 20) and Monday (March 22). Both games are slated to begin at 3 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field.
