GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team concluded competition at the NCAA Championships on Saturday (March 27), finishing tied for 12th (106 points) in the team race. Texas won the team title (595 points).
"What we did was battle," said head coach Mike Bottom. "We had so many different shutdowns, quarantines and the like, we didn't have a full tank when we started. We just ran out of gas here. But the things we've learned this season, both as a coaching staff and as a team, are invaluable. Some of the lessons hurt. You don't want to go through what we went through, but we did learn a lot. In the end, we made it through the season, and that says a lot about the determination our team showed."
"You learn from victory and learn by not being quite as good as you want to be," added associate head coach Josh White. "We're all really proud of these guys, how they kept their heads up and continued to work. It's obviously not the end result we wanted because we believe we're a better team than the results show, but it doesn't take away the pride these guys have and how they stuck together through tremendous adversity. They're already hungry to come back again and show what Michigan is all about."
Four swimmers took to the water in the 100-yard freestyle with sophomore River Wright earning a second swim by the smallest of margins. He tied for 15th in preliminaries, getting into the consolation final by .01 seconds and moved up from there, taking 11th in finals (42.30). Senior Luiz Gustavo Borges tied for 22nd (42.68), sophomore Cam Peel tied for 37th (43.22) and junior Patrick Callan tied for 42nd (43.60).
In the 200-yard backstroke, junior Jared Daigle took 25th with a lifetime best (1:42.14), while freshman Wyatt Davis was 32nd (1:43.10). Two others swam in the 200-yard breaststroke: junior Will Chan finished 37th (1:56.64) and junior Mason Hunter finished 39th (1:57.20).
Senior Ross Todd got a tough break on platform, finishing 17th in preliminaries (325.35), ultimately one spot shy of the consolation final.
Two swimmers took to the water for the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshman Jake Mitchell was 22nd (14:59.07), while senior Will Roberts was 19th (15:04.72).
The Wolverines nearly broke the school record on the 400-yard freestyle relay, but were disqualified for an early take-off.
