U-M Defeats No. 7 Iowa in Home Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The second-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team won its home opener, 402.650-398.650, versus No. 7 Iowa on Saturday (March 6) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan won four of the six team events. Senior Cameron Bock won pommel horse, still rings and parallel bars, while classmate Jacob Moore took the event win on high bar.
U-M opened the meet with a mark of 67.900 on floor exercise, led by senior Nick Guy (14.450) and Moore (14.350). After the first rotation, Michigan held a lead of more than three points over Iowa.
In the second rotation, U-M's lead shrunk to less than a point after scoring a 65.600 on pommel horse. Bock won the event with a mark of 14.550, a new career high.
The third rotation saw U-M score a 66.100 on still rings, paced by event-winner Bock (14.400) and senior James Read (13.800). After the third, Iowa captured the overall lead by more than four points.
U-M rebounded in the fourth rotation on vault, scoring its highest event score of the day, 70.450. Leading the Wolverines was sophomore Casey Cummings (14.350), along with freshman Javier Alfonso (14.250) and Bock (14.150).
In the fifth rotation, U-M scored a 66.600 on parallel bars. Bock (14.400) won the event, with freshman Evgeny Siminiuc posting a 14.200. After the fifth rotation, U-M's lead expanded to more than two points.
To finish the day, U-M increased its lead with a 66.000 on high bar, led by event-winner Moore (13.600) and senior Anthony Tawfik (13.400).
Bock was awarded the Newt Loken Award for his performance on the day.

Michigan will continue its Big Ten slate on Sunday (March 14) at 1 p.m. when they host Minnesota on Senior Day inside Cliff Keen Arena.
