ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Kevin Buca scored in the 54th minute to lift the No. 3 seed University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Michigan State on Saturday (April 10) in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Austin Swiech gained possession of the ball in the right corner, stripping from the feet of defender Dante Morrissette. Derick Broche set a screen as Swiech centered the ball to the middle of the 18-yard box where Buca was running on and let a right-foot shot fly, beating MSU goalkeeper Hunter Morse to the opposite corner.
Buca, who now sits atop the scoring column along with Marc Ybarra with nine points, has scored all three of his goals this season against the Spartans.
Sophomore keeper Owen Finnerty made five saves in the shutout, his fourth of the season. His best came on a set piece taken by Jack Beck from in front of the Michigan State bench in the 77th minute. The ball arched down and Finnerty made a leaping save to tip the ball up over the cross bar and out of play.
Today's win also marked the 200th victory in program history.
The Wolverines advance to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, where they will face No. 2 seed Penn State on Wednesday (April 14) at 5 p.m. in State College, Pa. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
