ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan softball team earned a series sweep in its first home series in two seasons, cruising to an 8-0, five-inning decision against Maryland on Sunday afternoon (April 18) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Michigan (21-4, 21-4 Big Ten) scored at least one run in each inning of the shortened game -- just the second run-rule win by the Wolverines this season -- and earned 12 hits from eight different players. Senior first baseman Lou Allan knocked two solo home runs, while senior third baseman Taylor Bump went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a home run of her own. Both Allan and Bump boasted three long balls over the weekend series.
Junior RHP Alex Storako (13-2) took a perfect game into the fourth inning before Maryland (11-17, 11-17 Big Ten) spoiled the effort with a pair of singles to the outfield. She fanned nine through four innings, while senior RHP Sarah Schaefer added another strikeout in the fifth.
Junior center fielder Lexie Blair scored the first and game-winning run after drawing a leadoff walk in the first, advancing on a wild pitch and a sac bunt and scoring on a passed ball. Allan connected with the next pitch for her first of two homers on the day, lining to the top of the right-field wall. The ball hit the wall, bounced up and came down on top of it and then back into the park, as Allan slid into second base before getting the umpire signal to head home.
Bump led off the second with a solo shot to left-center field -- after scattering homers to center and right the previous two days. Allan also homered again in her next turn at the plate in the third inning, with a solo no-doubter to left field. Bump and Allan own career highs in homers this season with four and six, respectively -- all but one coming over the last nine games.
Bump tacked on a couple more in the third with a two-run single up the middle, before senior shortstop Natalia Rodriguez pushed the game into run-rule territory with an RBI triple to center -- her third three-bagger of the season -- and scored herself on a wild pitch high and to the backstop.
Michigan will remain home next weekend, hosting Northwestern for a four-game set at Alumni Field. The series opener is 6 p.m. on Friday (April 23), live on ESPNU.
