MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team won its session of the NCAA Regional second round with a score of 197.650 on Friday night (April 2) at WVU Coliseum to advance to the NCAA Regional Final.
The Wolverines and UCLA advanced to the finals along with Cal and Ohio State, which earned their spots in the morning session of Friday's regional.
Michigan posted a season-high 49.525 on floor exercise behind four routines of 9.900 or higher. Junior Abby Heiskell and sophomore Gabby Wilson tied for the event title with matching 9.950s, marking a career-high for Heiskell and tying a career-best for Wilson.
The Wolverines also had an incredibly strong vault rotation, scoring a 49.650 to tie for their second-best score of the season, while they scored a 49.550 to close out the event on the uneven bars.
Sophomore Sierra Brooks took the title in the all-around, tying a career-best 39.650, while also earning the title on the vault tying a career-best 9.975. Brooks scored 9.900 or better on three events, notching a 9.925 on the uneven bars to close out the night.
After having a rough go on the balance beam, the Wolverines quickly turned it around on the floor rotation and posted a season-best 49.525 behind four routines that scored a 9.900 or better, including 9.950s from from Heiskell and Wilson, who tied for the event win. Brooks and Nicoletta Koulos also both posted big routines for U-M with a 9.925 and a career-high 9.900, respectively.
The Wolverines dominated the vault, taking the top three sports with Brooks tying a career best and earning the top spot, while Natalie Wojcik scored a 9.950 to finish second. Heiskell and freshman Reyna Guggino tied for third with 9.925s.
Wojcik paced U-M on the uneven bars, finishing first in the second session and second overall with a 9.950, and Brooks and Wilson tied for sixth with 9.925s in the final rotation.
Michigan will compete for its 13th NCAA Regional title Saturday (April 3) at 7 p.m. at WVU Coliseum. The meet is set to be streamed live on ESPN3.
