BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Led by 110-meter hurdlers Job Mayhue and Josh Zeller, a small contingent from the University of Michigan men's track and field team competed Friday (April 9) at the B1G Indiana Invitational, setting several new career-best performances along the way.
With his winning 14.00 (-0.6m/s), Mayhue just missed his career best from this weekend two years ago by .01 seconds. Zeller was right there with him as they crossed the finish line, posting a time of 14.04 seconds. In his first-ever 110-meter hurdles race over the 42-inch hurdles used at the senior level, Zeller missed the all-time U-M top-10 performers list by just .05 seconds.
At the 800-meter distance, Derrick Simmons ran the fastest time of his career for third place, covering two laps of the track in 1:50.03. Teammate Thomas Shilgalis also ran a career-best 1:51.60 for seventh place.
In the lone field event action for the Michigan men, true freshman pole vaulter Henry Sheldon cleared 5.05m (16 feet, 6.75 inches) to crack into the all-time Michigan outdoor top-10 at the No. 10 position.
Also taking fourth in career-best fashion as a first-year collegian was Leo Gabaron, who clocked 54.90 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.
Next weekend will be the first split-squad competition of the outdoor season as the sprinters and field-event athletes head to the B1G Texas Invitational in Prairie View, while the distance crew returns to Bloomington for the B1G Indiana Invitational #3. Both meets will be held Friday and Saturday (April 16-17).
