ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team will be out in full force -- albeit split between two different meets -- this weekend as the Wolverines compete at both the B1G Husker Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 16-17) in Prairie View, Texas, and the B1G Indiana Invitational #3 on Friday (April 16).
With the Big Ten Outdoor Championships just 30 days away, most of the conference's top sprinters and field-event athletes will be competing in a neutral-site event at Prairie View A&M hosted by Nebraska, while the distance events will take center stage at Indiana in what will be Michigan's third trip to Bloomington this season.
Action in Prairie View will get underway at noon CDT on Friday and last until just after 7 p.m. CDT, and will resume Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CDT with the meet expected to conclude just before 6 p.m. CDT.
Michigan's evening at Indiana will get underway at 7:10 p.m. ET, and is expected to conclude around 9:30 p.m. ET.
Though entries are not final, nearly all of the Wolverines' top contenders are expected to compete this weekend at one site or the other, including All-American distance runners Devin Meyrer and Tom Brady in their 2021 outdoor debuts -- and the overall U-M outdoor debut for Brady.
Among those joining them in Bloomington will be All-American Tom Dodd, individual Big Ten scorers in Nick Foster and Anthony Berry, and 2021 standouts Jacob Lee, Joost Plaetinck and Christian Hubaker.
The contingent heading to Texas will be led by individual All-Americans Ayden Owens, Andrew Liskowitz and John Meyer. Relay All-America Desmond Melson, NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifier Roland Amarteifio, and individual Big Ten scorers Heath Baldwin, Cassidy Henshaw, Mason Mahacek, Job Mayhue, Max Wagner and Josh Zeller also are expected to compete over the course of the two-day event.
The competition will feature only teams from the Big Ten, according to conference policy during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Once entries are finalized, this posting will be updated with more details and a full schedule of when to watch the Wolverines.
Fans can follow along with the action by way of live results from JWTiming for the Husker Invitational and via live results from Indiana for its meet. Updates will also be provided via the team's official social media accounts.
Notes and Outlook
• The Wolverines have been bolstered this outdoor season by the return of seniors from a year ago who only had 2021 eligibility for the outdoor season due to the cancellation of last year's spring campaign -- and they are making the most of their opportunity. Andrew Liskowitz ranks No. 12 nationally in the shot put, Max Wagner is tied for No. 48 in the high jump, and Roland Amarteifio is No. 59 in the 400-meter hurdles and ran a leg of the No. 49 4x400 relay.
• Liskowitz and John Meyer, who is ranked No. 21 nationally in the shot put, make Michigan one of just four schools (Southern California, Tennessee, North Dakota State) with multiple shot putters ranked top-25 nationally. Liskowitz was the 2020 indoor national leader before the championships were canceled and was a first team All-American outdoors in 2019, while Meyer was a first-team All-American indoors this past winter.
• In no event have the Wolverines gotten off to a faster start in 2021 than the 1,500-meter run, in which Michigan is ranked No. 5 in the Event Squad Rankings from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Nick Foster and Tom Dodd debuted at 3:42.97 and 3:43.21, respectively, which ranks No. 37 and 41 nationally, while No. 85 Anthony Berry clocked 3:45.44 and No. 113 Oli Raimond went 3:46.57.
• Michigan has also scored an impressive early-season No. 2 mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Event Squad Rankings, though fewer student-athletes nationwide have contested the event at this point in the season. Joost Plaetinck ranks No. 9 nationally at 8:52.68 and Christian Hubaker is No. 17 at 8:54.53, with Jacob Branch and Jack Spamer checking in at Nos. 55 and 76, respectively.
• Michigan also has three men ranked top-100 nationally in the 110-meter hurdles, propelling them to No. 5 in the USTFCCCA squad rankings. No. 44 Job Mayhue went 14.00 and No. 51 Josh Zeller went 14.04 in his U-M outdoor debut, with No. 100 Amarteifio and No. 126 Heath Baldwin not far behind. Not included: Ayden Owens and an illegally wind-aided 14.03 he ran earlier this month. He owns a best of 13.76 from his days at Southern California.
