Michigan Moves into Second at NCAA Regional; Trio of Wolverines Among Top 15

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Highlighted by a second straight 70 (-2) from freshman Monet Chun, the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team battled gusty winds to tally a second-round 296 on Tuesday (May 11), moving the Wolverines into second place at the NCAA Columbus Regional with a 584 36-hole total on the Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course. Chun sits in second place individually after two rounds.
The Wolverines are seven shots back of second-day leader Georgia (289-288/577, +1) and are one shot ahead of defending national champion Duke (287-298/585) after 36 holes. The trio will continue the quest for a top-six team finish to advance to the NCAA Championships and will be grouped for the final round on Wednesday (May 12) starting at 10:50 a.m. off the first tee.
"The conditions today got tougher as the day went on, and the winds really picked up," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Despite the changing conditions, we had another great day, staying tough and patient. This course requires playing high percentage and executing, and boy are they doing that. We are excited for our final round; it's one of the best days in college golf."
The 18-team field battled gusty and changing wind conditions all round long, and the Scarlet Course played almost two shots harder than Monday's opening round. Despite the winds and elevating scores, Chun etched four birdies and 12 of her regional-leading 28 pars (four-way tie) to card a second straight round of 70 (-2) and stay in second place with a 140 (-4) two-day total. Chun is just one shot out of the regional lead held by Georgia's Jenny Bae (71-68/139, -5). The duo will play together in the final round.
"I felt I played fairly well today, even with the changing conditions," said Chun. "I was able to hit a lot of greens, and that helped give me opportunities to make birdies. I left a few out there, but I was happy. Our team has always been able to battle tough conditions and stay patient on the course. Today that showed. We had patience and really took it one shot at a time. It's been fun competing alongside some of the best collegiate teams and so far a great experience."
After leading the first day with a career-low-tying 69 (-3), sophomore Hailey Borja opened her second round with three bogeys in her first four holes. She steadied her play, with two birdies negating two more bogeys, over the remaining 15 holes to post a 75 and stay among the top five with an even 144 total (tie for fifth).
Junior Ashley Lau continued her late-round dominance, using two birdies on Nos. 12 and 16 to post a 74 (+2) and moving into the top 15, in a tie for 13th at 147. Over the first two days, Lau has played the last seven holes at six under par (14 holes, six birdies, eight pars). Overall, Borja and Lau are tied for fourth with seven birdies apiece.
The top six teams and the low three individuals not on an advancing team will move on to the NCAA Championships at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., from Friday through Wednesday, May 21-26.
