Next on the Tee: NCAA Columbus Regional
Following a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships, the University of Michigan women's golf team moves into the NCAA postseason, heading to Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Regional, Monday through Wednesday (May 10-12). The 54-hole, three-day regional will be held at the OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course. The regional will be played in a five-count-four format with the Scarlet Course being set up for a par of 72 at 6,335 yards.
The NCAA Columbus Regional Field
There will be 18 teams and six individuals participating in the 2021 NCAA Columbus Regional. The seeding for the regional will be No. 1 Duke, No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Kent State, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Vanderbilt, No. 7 Michigan, No. 8 Clemson, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Kentucky, No. 11 Illinois, No. 12 New Mexico, No. 13 Nebraska, No. 14 Washington, No. 15 Coastal Carolina, No. 16 Campbell, No. 17 Evansville and No. 18 Youngstown State. The invited individuals: Leah Onosato (Old Dominion), Monika Hartl (N.C. State), Nicole Adam (North Carolina), Samantha Vodry (High Point), Rory Weinfurther (Richmond) and Maria Loza (Hartford).
The Additional NCAA Regionals and How to Advance
There are three additional regional sites -- LSU (Louisiana University Club), Louisville (Louisville Golf Club) and Stanford (Stanford Golf Course). Each site features 18 teams and six invited individuals with the top six teams (24 teams total) and the low three individuals (12 individuals total) not on an advancing team heading to the national championships at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., Friday through Wednesday, May 21-26.

Michigan's Columbus Regional Lineup
Michigan will have a five-member starting lineup at the NCAA Columbus Regional. Heading the Scarlet Course will be junior Ashley Lau, freshman Monet Chun, senior Ashley Kim, sophomore Hailey Borja and sophomore Mikaela Schulz.
The Last Time at the NCAA Regional in Columbus
• Michigan advanced to its second straight NCAA Finals following a sixth-place team finish at the 2017 NCAA Columbus Regional (May 8-10) at the Scarlet Course. U-M finished with a 908 (312-293-303) total.
• Tied with Colorado for the sixth and final advancing spot, Elodie Van Dievoet sank a dramatic 18-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole to break the tie and send the Wolverines to the finals.
• Van Dievoet led the Wolverines finishing ninth individually with a 221 (74-71-76) total. It was her sixth top-10 finish of the season and eighth time closing as the top Wolverine in an event. After opening with rounds of 81 and 83, Megan Kim was instrumental in U-M's final-round push, birdieing three of her final five holes to post the Wolverines' top final round tally at 74 (+2).
Michigan in the NCAA Postseason
Michigan has been represented in regional competition by the team or an individual 13 times, making team appearances in 2001, '02, '05, '07, '09, '11, '12, '16 and '17. Laura Olin (2004), Amy Schmucker (2006), Ashley Bauer (2010) and Ashley Lau (2019) made central regional appearances as individuals.
Michigan Advancing to the NCAA Finals
The Maize and Blue has advanced to the NCAA Finals three times in program history. Michigan finished 17th at the 2002 event held at Washington National in Auburn, Wash., and tied for 18th at the 2016 event held at Oregon Country Club in Eugene, Ore. In 2017, U-M tied for 16th at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Big Ten Postseason Honors
• Monet Chun was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year as well an All-Big Ten first team selection. She becomes the second Wolverine to earn the conference's rookie honor, and first for U-M in 25 years, after Katy Loy earned the accolade in 1996.
• Ashley Lau was named an All-Big Ten first team honoree and Hailey Borja was a second team selection for a second straight year, becoming just the fourth Wolverine to earn multiple honors. Lau also was U-M Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.
• U-M had three All-Big Ten selections for the second time in program history. In 2005, Laura Olin and Brianna Broderick were named to the first team, while Ali Stinson earned second-team honors.
• The Wolverines had two Big Ten Golfers of the Week. Hailey Borja earned the honor after tying a career-low with a 69 (-3) in the match vs. Florida Gulf Coast (Jan. 8). Ashley Lau posted her first career after she earned medalist honors (three-way tie) at the Indiana Invitational.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan has produced five straight top-five team finishes this season. The count is seven consecutive dating back to the final two events of the COVID-19 shortened 2019-20 season. After opening this season with a win over Florida Gulf Coast, U-M was third at the Florida State Match Up (896), fifth at the Briar's Creek Invitational (890), third at the PING/ASU Invitational (864, E) and fourth at the Indiana Invitational (877). The Maize and Blue made it five straight with the runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships (858, -6).
• Ashley Lau has led the Wolverines in four of six events. All four of those events were top-10 finishes, including her first medalist honor at the Indiana Invitational with a 212 (-4) tally -- which helped her to her first Big Ten Golfer of the Week accolade. Overall, Lau holds the top three 54-hole tournament totals this season, including a career-low 211 (-5) at the Big Ten Championships, the second-lowest tally in program history. She has averaged below par for 54-hole events with a 215.80 average.
• Ashley Lau has put five straight sub-par rounds on the leaderboard over the last two events and has eight red totals over her last 10 rounds. Twice this season she has fired a U-M best and career-low 68 (-4) -- the final rounds of the PING/ASU Invitational and Indiana Invitational. Lau leads U-M with a 72.00 per round scoring average.
• Monet Chun has finished as the second-best Wolverine in all six, posting five top-15 and three top-10 individual finishes. She has averaged 73.06 per round, which is second best on the team. She has posted three sub-par rounds, including a career-low 70 (-2) in the first round of the Indiana Invitational (April 17-18) and the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational (March 26-28). Chun posted a career-low-tying 215 (-1) tally at the Big Ten Championships (April 23-25) -- the lowest U-M freshman tally all-time.
• Hailey Borja started all six events and has carried a career-best pace of 73.69 per round as she has four sub-par tallies and two of even par. She earned Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors after she tied her career-low with a 69 (-3) to win the match vs. Florida Gulf Coast (Jan. 18). Borja posted four top-25 individual finishes and helped the Wolverines to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships after tying for 16th.
• Ashley Kim posted a season-best tie for 17th at the PING/ASU Invitational with a 217 (+1) tally after posting a season-low 70 (-2) in the first round. She is scoring at a 75.25 per round clip -- fourth best on U-M. Last season, she led U-M with a 72.67 scoring average and highlighted 2019-20 by posting her first individual win at Miami's Hurricane Invitational (March 2-3).
• Mikaela Schulz has played in all six events this season, with four starts. She has become a major contributor in the final round as she has averaged even par (72.00) in her last four last rounds. She has tallies of 73 (+1, Briar's Creek), 72 (even, PING/ASU Invitational), 72 (even, Indiana Invitational) and a season-low 71 (-1. Big Ten Championships). Overall, she carries a 76.44 per round average.
