ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored five times in the third inning and three times in the fourth as it took down No. 21-ranked Indiana by a score of 10-3 on Friday (May 14) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan vaults into a first-place tie with the Hoosiers pending Nebraska's Friday night outcome, as the Cornhuskers entered play a half-game behind Indiana in the close Big Ten race.
Ted Burton started the scoring with a long home run in the second inning with the first of three U-M long balls against an Indiana team that entered play among the nation's leaders in earned-run average.
Indiana capitalized on a bad break for Michigan in the third inning when a two-out fly ball got lost in the sun and fell for a two-run single and a 2-1 Hoosiers lead.
Michigan (24-12, 24-12 Big Ten) answered loudly in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases against Tommy Sommer and Griffin Mazur tying the game at 2 with an RBI single through the left side to chase the Indiana starter in favor of Braden Scott. Scott did not find immediate success as Benjamin Sems and Burton both laced the first pitches they saw for RBI singles. Tito Flores followed with a hard single to left field that scored two runs for a sudden 6-2 lead.
Mazur answered the call again in the fourth inning when he took the first pitch he saw from Scott and launched a three-run blast to left field to give Michigan a 9-2 lead.
Indiana (23-11, 23-11 Big Ten) got a run back in the seventh when it chased Steven Hajjar (4-0) from the game and got a sacrifice fly against reliever Isaiah Paige, who left the bases loaded with a popup to end the rally.
Hajjar was tremendous in remaining perfect on the season. The lefty ace struck out eight batters while allowing six hits in 6.1 innings of work. Paige finished the game, striking out four batters and scattering four hits in 2.2 scoreless frames.
Clark Elliott turned on a first-pitch fastball in the eighth inning and deposited it over the wall in right-center for a solo home run to account for the final margin.
Flores' three hits led all players while Burton, Sems and Mazur had two hits apiece.
Michigan and Indiana will continue their series Saturday (May 15) with a 2 p.m. start at Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
