ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 13-8 against No. 21 Indiana on Saturday (May 15) at the Wilpon Complex in the middle game of their three-game set to even the series at one game apiece.
Indiana grabbed a 4-0 lead in the third inning on four hits, scoring three unearned runs following a critical throwing error that prolonged the inning.
The Hoosiers seemingly put the game out of reach in the seventh with a three-run, two-out homer to right off the bat of Grant Richardson that increased Indiana's lead to 7-0, but Michigan rallied in the bottom of the frame.
IU righty McCade Brown (5-2) had cruised into the seventh, allowing only a second-inning double, but he ran into resistance as U-M chased him from the game after the first three batters reached base, including an RBI double from Tito Flores. Christian Molfetta, Clark Elliott and Jimmy Obertop met reliever John Mudungo with three straight singles to cut the Wolverines' deficit to 7-5. Indiana was forced to go to closer John Litwicki, who was fortunate and knocked down a liner back at him off the bat of Benjamin Sems and made the play at first base to get out of the inning with a two-run lead.
Michigan could not hold the momentum in the next inning, as the Hoosiers benefited from erratic relief pitching to the tune of four walks and a hit batsman as part of a six-run inning in reclaiming momentum 13-5. Michigan did respond with three runs in the bottom of the eighth but had too much ground to make up.
Cameron Weston took the loss (5-3) after allowing four hits, all in the third inning, and two walks while striking out four batters.
Obertop finished the day with three RBI, while Molfetta and Elliott drove in two runs each.
The series will conclude Sunday (May 16) with a 1 p.m. finale at Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
