ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan baseball team collected 14 hits Saturday (May 22) in a resounding 14-3 victory over Maryland at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Wolverines connected for eight extra-base hits, including two home runs, as they scored at least 10 runs for the ninth time this season.
U-M struck first with three runs in the second inning, including a two-run opposite-field double from Joey Velazquez to follow his three-RBI performance in Friday night's (May 21) series opener.
Michigan (26-24, 26-14 Big Ten) scored three more times in the third to chase Maryland starter Jason Savacool. Tito Flores delivered a bases-loaded single, and Jordon Rogers laced a two-run single to left. Maryland got out of further trouble when the red-hot Velazquez laced a liner that was caught on a slide by right fielder Troy Schreffler.
Burton provided the home team another three runs in the fourth inning when he bashed a homer over the wall in left field to give U-M a 9-0 lead.
Three more doubles in the sixth inning provided two more Michigan runs with Benjamin Sems and Burton driving home runs for an 11-0 lead.
Maryland (25-15, 25-15 Big Ten) finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning against the U-M bullpen. Two leadoff walks were followed by a three-run homer from Chris Alleyne. Michigan swiftly answered in the bottom of the frame as Sems launched a three-run shot of his own.
Cameron Weston earned the win (6-3) with 5.1 impressive innings in which he limited the red-hot Maryland offense to just three soft singles, while striking out six batters and walking three. Ben Dragani threw the final 3.2 innings, scattering three hits and three runs to record his first save of the season.
