ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After combining to score 22 runs over the first two games of their series with Maryland, the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan baseball team could not get the bats going in a 7-3 setback against the Terrapins on Sunday (May 23) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Maryland jumped out of the gate quickly, touching U-M starter Jacob Denner (4-4) for three first-inning runs on four hits, including a pair of homers.
Michigan got the runs back in the second inning when Tito Flores launched a three-run homer to left to score Benjamin Sems (single) and Ted Burton (double).
Maryland reclaimed the lead at 4-3 in the third thanks to a leadoff double and an RBI groundout that chased Denner from the game in favor of Blake Beers, who got out of trouble only to be removed the following inning as the Terrapins scored three more times on five hits, four of them infield singles, as they took a 7-3 advantage.
That was all Maryland needed as Michigan was unable to mount enough of an offensive attack to answer, finishing the game with just four hits.
The Wolverines did finish the game with pitching confidence as its relief corps of Logan Wood, Joe Pace and Willie Weiss keeping the potent Terrapins offense scoreless, combining for 6.0 innings of one-hit relief with seven strikeouts.
Michigan will hit the road to finish the regular season Friday through Sunday (May 28-30) with a three-game series against Nebraska in Lincoln.
